The most profitable patient is one with a chronic (highly functioning) illness, not a cured one.

When I lived in the US I was always amazed by the amount of ads for painkillers and other fixes. I came to the understanding that healthcare for many was not about curing people, but about making people able to work. I've never seen so many people with chronic illnesses poorly addressed as in the US.

Remember 20 years ago, the big crazy conspiracy theory was that they have a cure for cancer but Big Pharma suppressed it because it's more profitable to treat sick people than cure them?

Nonsense, of course, but it's shocking that there are actual people actually trying to make it real!

@uastronomer A lot of it is just IP shenanigans and not nearly as exotic, but often to the same effect. Limited patents are ok IMO, to protect investments and get a reasonable return on investment. However, as per article, the system now looks for >6% annually into perpetuity, which is at odds with healthy people.
