The faded flags make it look like they've just celebrated the Allied Expeditionary Force liberating their town in 1944, then left the bedroom as it was.

The more I look, the more I think this might actually be related to WW2? The American flag has the old 1940s number of stars, from before Alaska and Hawaii were made states (you can tell because they form a rectangle, whereas the modern US flag has its stars offset).
The furniture looks period too?
Was the Chinese flag the modern communist one (red with yellow stars) or the 1940s nationalist one (red with blue square and white sun)?
