RE: mastodon.social/@Thayer/116736…

Oh dear. Further to my #AI problem with the #NHS using AI that stopped my meds (story quoted below), now we're all going to be subjected to it as first line.

"NHS app to use AI to determine which service best for patients"

RE: mastodon.social/@Thayer/116002…

To follow up on the situation where non consensual NHS AI got my medical notes wrong: it is possible to have AI removed from your NHS note taking that's on by default. You have to request it in writing from your GP. I have now managed after a request in Feb, and have it confirmed in writing. Recommend you do to!!!

I couldn't get through the new AI phone system to book an appointment or talk to a human.
I speak standard English but it didn't understand me.
Several attempts to get my date of birth then it couldn't get my name (one of the commonest in England).
Finally it asked me to spell it starting with "a is for apple".
I guess the USA company never heard of the standard international way to spell out words.

I gave up. I also put in a complaint but no response.

Im guessing the incredibly verbose answers, that UK patients have been trained to provide already due to scarcity of appointments and fear of not getting the message through enough, is going to cause an interesting line item cost for tokens, especially after the bubble pop, for what could’ve still been a multi choice triage wizard.

there is one difference here: transcription tech is not regulated directly, but triage is. This will need to be a medical device, and if it doesn’t work it can be yellow carded. I think MHRA generally do a decent job.

@alexhudson in general I think it could be amazing. But in practice, and in specifics, it just isn't for a fair amount of outliers where it's potentially life and death. I realise it's the same for humans looking at details and humans, but the added fact that techbros will make more trillions off our medical data and possible herd us up for a mass slaughter one day based on some genetic trait scares the living shit out of me.

completely agree, the safety shouldn’t change as the tech does. Triage is also an area which is difficult to get right - most docs I know still don’t like NHS 111 eg. I don’t envy the team rolling this out.

very light on details both in the BBC story and the NHS England press release they cribbed from. No idea if this is a flowchart type system like they use on NHS 111 or an LLM monstrosity that will advise patients to glue their own arm back on.

@spzb "that sounds like a great idea! You're right! No actually I was wrong about that, please do take twice as much" etc
