[vent/rant] I was only trying to help dad

Usually for #3 that means the USB is built incorrectly. If you create the ISO with Rufus, it will work, and you can get around #1 and #4 that way as well.

Win11, as far as installs go, is pretty much exactly what Win10 was.

I created the bootable USB with dd on Linux and I later confirmed on another laptop that it's bootable, so.

Didn’t say it wasn’t bootable, but built incorrectly. In this case, using dd. I’ve seen the same results even using the official USB creation tool from Microsoft, but for whatever reason, Rufus always works. I’d just suggest building the media a different way without using dd.

The other thing you can do, since it sounds like you can still boot into Windows on his PC, is to use the Reset This PC process. That will download the media, nuke the drive and delete all the user data (you can choose to keep it also), and reinstall Windows to an out-of-box state. It does not require a USB.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t let you leverage the Rufus tools that will automatically turn off system requirements, or create a local user, at USB creation time. Offers way more than using just straight dd.

Example from another site’s article:

As soon as I saw your comment, I asked dad. There IS such a button just next to the CPU/busy LED... But I refuse to be ashamed for fighting this battle. 😭🤣 Well, next time. Thanks! 🙏

after which you can run OOBE\BYPASSNRO to reboot into a mode that allows you to skip ms account setup.

“But the plans were on display…”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

“That’s the display department.”

“With a flashlight.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

“So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

Microslop Shitshow, nice one.

~~Btw, can Rufus still enable offline accounts?~~ yes, still does.

I'm confused. Did you help dad or did you install Windows on his machine?

For #1, it absolutely is possible, but the technique has changed over time. You pretty much have to look it up every time, and check older methods until you find the way that works with the version you're using. Last I checked you needed to disconnect any NICs, then hit one of the F keys during setup to get to the command prompt, then put in a specific command, then reboot into setup again. Been years though.

For #2, Command Prompt doesn't because it's still the same shit it was from the 90s. They have an open source program called Windows Terminal that supports tabs, multiple environments, most of the nice stuff you'd expect from a good Linux Terminal, but they don't include it by default so you have to install it yourself.

#3 and #4 are pure bullshit. 1 and 2 are as well, but at least they have reasonably reachable workarounds.

OP has a righteous rant.

It's why we must never give up control of Linux to BigTech. It's OSS, yah... But there are lotsa ways they can weasel. Ex, see Google's h/w attestation. Or co's trying to monopolize the ecosystem. Or legal attacks. Or subtle ways to wrestle control, that most ppl won't recognize until its too late.

There are LOTS of important contributions to Linux by big tech co's. That's fine and good. We need that! But that's as far as we can let it go. Contributions, good. Taking control, bad.

Linux is a tempting target, since it isn't yet vassalized. Vigilance is critical.

I even bought an activation key on Kinguin

Don't waste your money, massgrave.dev is right there

One command, works flawlessly.

That's some industry-strength bullshit there. It's not an all purpose computer despite pretending to it.

There's another trick I use sometimes when nothing else works..

  • Use ANOTHER computer to install Windows onto the the original laptop drive. (make sure that computer you're using has no other drives plugged in).
  • once the installation process is complete, during the reboot countdown, turn off the computer instead, don't let it reboot.
  • install the drive back into the original computer

I've used that method to get around off lease or auction laptops where I couldn't reset/remove/clear/reflash the bios password and all the boot stuff/order is locked down
