there was an attempt to fork the project with a different name of "Glimpse" - but it didn't stick

It comes with non-destructive filters. And photoshop-style Text transformations (shadow, bevel...)

Now there are no excuse to use Adobe

What is the problem with the name Gimp? Sorry I am not an native english speaker.
in reply to anonymiss

The problem for some with the use of the word "Gimp" is that sometimes it has been used as a slang word for someone who is crippled or physically disabled. In kink-sex-bdsm circles "gimp" also sometimes refers to a submissive that is in bondage or other gear designed to humiliate them. So because of those things some people find the name GIMP for the software is offensive. It's never bothered me, I don't really think of these other uses when I hear the word, I just think of an open source free tool that has enabled me to get my image editing and not have to pay exorbitant subscription fees to Adobe.

Thanks for the explanation, @Steven Berson. I had to translate but it explains quite well!

The measure of offense is not whether it bothers those for whom it is not an insult, but rather how it perpetuates oppression to those who have been victimized by this word as a taunt.

If the “N-word” does not personally offend you, that does not make it okay for you to use that word, does it?

The software makers were warned about this problem long ago, and they chose to ignore it. That’s a poor reflection of their empathy for others.

The "n-word" has a history of massive amounts of violence with its use, where as "gimp" doesn't really have that, which is why they are not equivalent to me, but I can understand if some are offended with a software is using that name. In which case, luckily this is a FOSS project, so it can just be forked with a new name and branding. In fact this has already happened, with the "Glimpse" project, and folks that are offended just need to help assist updating the fork to 3.0 if they want an immediate solution. github.com/azubieta/Glimpse
