🚨 New post alert πŸ“

A deep dive into #WSocial with some fascinating findings: candid statements about their motives, a Greta Thunberg connection, potential AI plans (!!!)

Why write about it again? I still had so many questions after publishing my first article.

I spent 3 weeks watching every interview I could find and connecting the dots.

I hope you'll enjoy this piece:

W Social is just another disease that don't need a cure. It will die by itself. πŸ€žβ€‹

they sure are. But, what is a social media network without users like you and me? If they build something for the "elite" - they can, but who is it for? Not me. The whole vibe with that project is just off. Way off. Anyway, you have done a fantastic job writing about it.

Yep, that's how I think of them too. πŸ˜€

great article πŸ’œ, thanks for doing some real journalism instead of regurgitating press releases like the mainstream media do

My top 3 "favorite" (aka juicy) discoveries about #WSocial, which I discuss on my blog:

πŸ”— : blog.elenarossini.com/the-unto…

1) The co-founders picked #ATproto but only started using the network WEEKS after their Davos launch

2) The CEO said "we also want to keep European data in Europe to maybe train European AI models with our data because we also have amazing AI companies in Europe" 🀯

3) W Social user "homersimpson"

If you enjoy the article please boost it πŸ™

"maybe train European AI models with our data"

Feels like they're giving away the plan like they think we're James Bond tied to a table that we can't possibly escape...

Great research and write-up. Thank you!

I miss when we had tech publications that would run this sort of article…

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Damn. When an idea seems good in advance but shows it's true colours as a baddie later.

(cf Google, Mozilla, etc)

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

1 and 2 are pretty contradictory, since ATproto makes all data public. You can't keep the network's data in Europe if any spider can crawl it from any locatiom.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Thanks. Do you know also anything about eurosky.tech/?

Also lately my favorite question, how will it work on obsolete smartphones of poor people, who cannot afford to buy a new one, and the manufacturer stopped issuing security updates, so their smartphone is unsafe and a risk for hacking and identity theft?

#obsolescence #plannedobsolescence #smartphone #poverty #digitaldivide #affordability #incomeinequality #securityupdate #unsafe #risk #hacking #identitytheft

I heard the media getting excited about it. Checked its info and thought, Nah, just another X/Musk deal - I'll stick with Fedi and FOSS.

Excellent piece of investigative journalism again Elena!
What's also a red flag in my book is this quote from Zeiter:
"And by this we want to create a platform where things like climate, environment can be discussed in a non-cancel culture."
A non-cancel culture is exactly the argument Elon used. Well, we all know how that turned out. πŸ™„

My impression is that their pitch is to build an effectively centralized network that can be regulated easily according to EU politicians' wishes (strong ID requirements, age restrictions, etc.). They will probably try to build something like a 21st-century royal court with politicians surrounded by journalists and celebrities, but I'm not sure you can make a tens of billions doing that.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Nice work. Absolutely something I would boost across other networks if I still had accounts on them!

(also, BeReal is still around?!)

Wow superbe recherche !

That MEGA hat in the header image is a lot, too.

Science, but somehow not thinking.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

lol, thank you, being based on atproto is enough information for me to not touch it with a 10ft pole...
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

thanks for the depth, and yes:
what a surprising surprise!: as shady today as it was from the beginning..
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

i spend some time in a videocall with one of their people and you confirm quite a lot of my suspicions. Great research!
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

I think the motives are easy.

1. They want to make money.
2. Politicians want to appear to be doing something about social media along various axes (age gates, identity, sovereignty)
3. "We have a product ready to go, give us funding / move your social presence to us / write laws that match our behaviour and cause problems for our competitors" is a tried and tested way to get market dominance.

in reply to Nik

IMHO the biggest risk to the Fediverse is not technical or project/social, it's regulatory capture by other services.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Thanks for writing this. It is really important to know where this comes from, who they are, and what it is.
in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Very well done!

I'm still amazed that so many people think all they have to do is "talk a good game" once they make all the connections, all the while thinking that they're so stealthy and sneaky enough to bypass any suspicions, and then, "just a little bit more, and we'll fool everybody".

I swear they just can't help themselves and still end up with a massive trail of breadcrumbs for someone to find, and in this case, that someone was you.

@w_b @vinterkarusell would like to add this is a great piece. It reminds me a lot of people like Rutger Bregman and his "School For Moral Ambition". He also made a bit of a name for himself at Davos.

People should be asking - why (and how?) are these people being pushed onto such a platform?

Most of these people see things like climate change as nice opportunities to earn $$$ - either directly or through additional soft power.

No one needs enemies, especially those in power.

Thank you for your efforts and analysis.

Β« #WSocial 's beta program will open on June 17th and it will be interesting to see how many people will be willing to give W their government IDs to set up an account - when #Eurosky and #Bluesky exist, plug into the same network, and do not have such a requirement. Β»

... and @france-atmosphe.re is actively pushing Bluesky accounts verification

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Very nicely done. Congratulations. πŸ‘

It would be somewhat depressing if an opportunistic top down initiative like this succeeded. Have you read Carl Malamud's An Internet Travelogue? It may or may not be realistic to still hope that grass roots power still exists and may yet prevail. The book describes the triumph of nerds over bureaucrats in protocol-land. CM is still doing good things.

in reply to Elena Rossini 🌈

Their business reads like the jelly of the month club. Whatever is popular in people’s minds that minute? Yeah, that’s totally their most important priority. Until next month, anyway.

excellent investigation, thank you!
