At this point, I think it would be insane of Microsoft to not start offering stock Windows on Xbox consoles.

Of the three modern consoles, the Xbox Series X|S has the smallest game library.

By running stock Windows, Xbox gamers would now have access to Steam, GOG.com, itch.io, Epic Game Store, and more.

They’d go from having the smallest library to the largest library – one that spans decades. They’d be able to play old bangers like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which never got a console release.

And hell, if Microsoft added trackpad support on the Xbox controller, Xbox gamers could even play the original Baldur’s Gate, which also never got a console release.

If Microsoft added the entire original Xbox and 360 library, Microsoft would have the best damn gaming platform on the planet.

we both know that that's not #Microsoft's trajectory, because if they were smart, they'd already discontinued #Windows, put code into #Wine and instead focussed of #Office365, #Azure and #XboxGamePass...

That being said, I do expect Microsoft to take their experience from the #XboxOneS and start developing basically their reply to #Chromebook with a #ThinClient for #Microsoft365 products...

@kkarhan If they don’t put stock Windows on an Xbox device, Valve will eat their lunch. It’s already starting to happen too.

@kkarhan Microsoft half-asses PC gaming as well. And the ridiculous thing is, without even trying, they still dominate the PC gaming market.

Why is Microsoft even in the console market when they’re third place and publishers won’t even release games for the Xbox Series X|S?

And yet there’s more games released on Windows every day than some consoles’ whole lifespans.

So Microsoft should just pull the plug on those walled garden consoles and embrace what they do best – which is PC gaming.

@kkarhan if Valve made a Steam Deck like a Switch I'd probably finally spring for one. I don't like joysticks much but the allure of a dedicated device is nonzero.

@nus @kkarhan Apart from detachable Joy-Cons, the Steam Deck is already like a Switch.

Just like a Switch, you can dock it to a TV or monitor. You can also use a bluetooth controller as well as keyboard and mouse.

I have one and it’s amazing.

in reply to Chris Trottier

dude and with game pass, it would absolutely beat out Sony and Nintendo and they would never be able to compete, it would be essentially a no-brainer to get an xbox.
in reply to glaroc

@glaroc Exactly. All they have to do is build a Big Picture mode for the Windows Xbox app, and have it launch on start-up. Now you have something that competes with both Steam and Sony/Nintendo.
in reply to Chris Trottier

even better if they could build a portable xbox platform, imagine that, the Switch would be killed as a result.
in reply to glaroc

@glaroc I’ve heard rumours of such a device. If true, I hope they put actual stock Windows on it. Then we’d have something everyone wants.
in reply to Chris Trottier

yep, heard its in the works for a 2029 ot 2030 release form leaked documents that came out last year.
in reply to glaroc

@glaroc Well, if they’re waiting that long, they’re going to have trouble. Valve is moving fast.
