...even in China's manufacturing backyard, the no. 1 language is English,
... Only (all) #Scandinavian countries seem to teach English well enough, so that Duolingo isn't #1.

It's a map of the tiny proportion of people that are actively trying to learn a new language.
And it's aspirational -- people are learning the language of the places they want to long-term visit or live. So those Nordic people want to go somewhere *warm*.
The #Netherlands certainly teaches English well -- 90% of the #Dutch are fluent. I suspect that if you could see language #2 it would also be Spanish.

I agree.
The same could be said about #Canada, but #French being the native language of some Provinces tips the scalesin favor of French.
Regarding #Mandarin it might also be that even for native speakers it is a live-long endeavor.
Who many languages do you know for which you need learn about 2.500 signs so that you can read an average newspaper?
