in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •good luck with that.
It is entirely delusional to think that you can detect someoneβs mood by how they sound or look.
Or just plain stupid.
I have hidden it very well and I have known others who do it way better than me because they can also smile.
It is a futile endeavour. Worse than that it could lead to missing cases. That can be fatal.
People should NEVER rely on technology to find out if someone needs help. Extremely irresponsible rubbish.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •another classic example. Someone who is a sociopath or psychopath or even a narcissist. It takes real subtlety to pick up on it.
And software does not do HUMAN subtleties. Because humans are far too complex.
And even if it did pick up in some cases thereβs the problem of the power of suggestion and various other things so how do you know they are REALLY feeling that way?
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •and even if it was say 1 per cent accurate or even 95 per cent accurate thatβs still a hell of a lot of people to miss (not that everyone would be subjected to it).
Oh and itβs creepy. That alone is reason to not do this.
But why would those prats care about that?

in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •Very good points, not like any of this would ever stop them however, as they love spending billions on products nobody asked for!
As long as it's good enough for their money making needs, even if it's only right half the the time or less (might be able to detect somewhat simple indicators e.g. laughter, crying etc) and results in fatalities.
I guess new technology always isn't perfect but these mega corps are utterly irresponsible and approach it with the worst motivations.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •it reminds me of the βtechnologyβ that supposedly could detect (by facial expressions) someoneβs sexual orientation.
Which when I read about it years ago immediately reminded me of the Gestapo. Why? Well they more than once offered a Jew a job. The Nazis (and the SS were classic here) had pseudo science including that by analysing the skull you can tell if they were Jewish (a more accurate check if not perfectly you probably know).
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •the SS Lebensborn (to create Aryans to replace the lost blood) despite having βbackground checksβ going back generations ended up creating not βpureβ people.
Women were even given benefits to have sex with βpureβ SS men.
There is the infamous caste for occultism.
The common part is Himmler.
And although I donβt know if this part is true he purportedly believed he was King Henry reincarnated. Well itβs easy to believe that!
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •but there also were and are a lot of lies and misinformation and bad memories and other things.
Something that a lot of people donβt know is that there were Jewish Nazis including in the SS (Himmler didnβt like it but Hitler overruled him).
GΓΆring famously said βI decide who is a Jewβ. Well itβs just like all bigotry: itβs a default but it doesnβt mean there arenβt exceptions.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •regardless the idea that technology can accurately detect these types of things has been shown historically to be complete rubbish yet people still go for it.
You are right though. Of course they donβt care! Anything for money or other gains (whatever that means to them).
Still itβs creepy to try and have technology that analyses someoneβs face to decide if they are happy or something else. Itβs also completely stupid.

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •no but it doesnβt surprise me in the least. Itβs much like the first example I mentioned. Different yes but similar in concept. And itβs creepy and bonkers.
On the other hand βartificial intelligence-powered smart city technologyβ makes me laugh.
And also it scares me. The wording is ridiculous but the fact that people are aiming for this - thatβs the problem.
Oh well. Not that we can do anything about it.

But as far as tv: what is wrong with CGI? This is just mad. Thereβs no need to use LLM (which frankly is what they mean).
I donβt understand it. Itβs pointless and unnecessary. Why use something else when there is something specifically designed for what you need?
Assuming they actually donβt use CGI of course.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •itβs more baffling when LLM manages to make so many mistakes. CGI has worked well for decades. But now that βAIβ is in the common language people seem to be using it for everything.
And unfortunately itβs also making people suspect even more what they see including some really lovely things that are real.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •for all its faults I think that last one is one of the most tragic.
So many people now see something and first think: okay but that looks too good to be true and since we have βthisβ it must not be!
Itβs good to not believe everything you see (people have faked things for eternity) but it is now a lot harder to actually determine things.
To me thatβs a huge problem and a huge tragedy.

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •well yeah thatβs a concern indeed.
But hereβs the thing. It might already be. And all these stupid shows using βitβ - it makes it even worse.
Yes some of it can be picked up on. But still there are very big problems already.
Unfortunately humans seem to invariably choose the worst possible options and often that is the easiest option. But humans have always been their own destroyers as well. History shows this. To those who pay attention.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •and of course governments the world over also have this tendency to arm or finance or sponsor groups that eventually become their enemies. Repeatedly. There comes a point (we long ago reached) when thereβs no excuse than daftness (at best).
Humans do not learn. Humans do not think beyond the moment.
Some do of course but many do not.
So everyone suffers.
MadeInDex π°π
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •Yes, very good points, there also some positive cases, but much fewer.
As you seem to have thought about this a lot as well, if you suddenly became the ruler of the world, how would you change this dynamic / break the cycle?

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •I would HATE that kind of power. Many people want it. They even feel what they describe as a need.
But power is a burden. It means you have to deal with others and their problems and other things.
I donβt want to have to make decisions for other people. Thatβs not my place.
But I do wish people would take care of the planet we have: wildlife, environment, all species, people.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •I also wish anti-vaxxers would go isolate themselves on an island. Make their own nation.
And I really loathe people who abuse and deny women rights.
But again: having to deal with all that would be a huge burden.
I have always been very aware of what I am capable of and very in tune and although I canβt know how I would act in this or that situation I know that it would stress me out because I already have enough to deal with.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •what I absolutely do know is that I would not want it though. Even in much smaller capacities when offered that kind of thing I have rejected it.
That has happened even when qualified (or experienced enough). Even things I have helped with or picked up where others donβt have always had doubts even if I do just fine.
Even when I KNOW I would do just fine.
But there are a lot of kinds of power arenβt there?
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •MadeInDex π°π
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •Well if you got absolute power, you could instantly democratize it.
But I get your point, however funnily enough it is often said that those who do not desire it, are best suited for power ;)
@madeindex@lemmy.world
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •yes that is said and I thought of that as well. But those who are best suited for it might not want it. As for democracy: let's be honest. There are many fake democracies and also real democracies by design have exactly what they need to destroy them.
Also...it might start out in good intentions but that is never how it actually ends up (absolute power I mean). And I doubt it ever starts with good intentions.

in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •Some examples are comical. Many of us have thought of the ridiculous βinflammableβ and others like that.
Yes lexicographers have to update according to how the words are being used. But sometimes they note itβs non standard. They should have at least done that.
Btw an example of a long list that popped into my head decades ago: the word long is short than short. Wide and narrow. There are countless others. Language is hilarious. And stupid.
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •although in that case a better word (than stupid) Is ironic.
Still though it is amusing.
Hereβs a fun word (and then I better bugger off before something bad happens): logomachy (pl. logomachies). An argument about or over words.
A lot more tucked in my head as well of course.
And yes I am afraid that I am very guilty of being in many logomachies!
(On the other hand it can be fun!)
MadeInDex π°π
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •Actually it's a talent, you often make me giggle, like I notice many wordplays and funny things in language, but you are on a whole other level! In your next life, you should become the editor of the English dictionary hehe
@madeindex@lemmy.world
Cody Boone Ferguson
in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •thanks .. although I would hate to be a lexicographer. It would mean that I would have to follow how words are being used which means I would have to follow .. PEOPLE!
I would have to draw a line there or before that.
βββ
The line is above.
Anyway yes I do (tend to) have a way with words. But that can also get one into trouble.
I have to be careful. And I know there are times I am not successful. Oh well.
MadeInDex π°π
in reply to Cody Boone Ferguson • • •That is a very solid - dash line haha
Not only with peoples feeling etc.
These days in most countries words can get you into so much trouble, can't believe what is happening to democracies and free speech tbh

Which reminds me of a hilarious old joke .. maybe I will share it (has to be a screenshot) but not now anyway.
