Servers on the Fediverse are totally independent of each other, with no centralised infrastructure at all. If one server goes down, other servers can keep going. The essence of the Fediverse is that it does not put all its eggs in one basket.

That's one of many reasons why it's a bad idea to sign up on a supergiant server like mastodon.social, and much better to sign up on a different server. You can find lots of good reliable human-curated servers at fedi.garden and joinmastodon.org/servers
