Er nutzt unter anderem Friendica, Mastodon, PeerTube, BookWyrm und PixelFed, um seine Inhalte zu veröffentlichen und unterschiedliche Zielgruppen zu erreichen. Dabei wurde auch deutlich, wie hilfreich die Gruppenfunktion in Friendica für den thematischen Austausch sein kann.

Es war ein gelungener Abend, der einmal mehr gezeigt hat: Das Fediverse lebt von seiner Vielfalt und dem Miteinander. 🌱

Want an update on the Weekend at Bernie’s clown show that is W Social? No? Me neither, but here we are…

So before we start, let’s recount the whole dystopian raison d’être of these Davosian clowns: to be a EU®opean “alternative to X” that ­– cue the 1984 theme tune – verifies your identity to ensure that only “real people” are on it (real is what your government says it is).

Now, let’s fast forward to last week, when TikTok set up an account on W Social.

That’s nice, isn’t it? One surveillance capitalist lending their support to another? Kumbaya and all that. The only problem? (spoiler alert), it wasn’t TikTok. (Shocking, I know.)

The account, Identity Verified™ by EU X – sorry, W Social, was a spam account and immediately labelled as such by BlueSky moderators. (Don’t you love a “decentralised” system where a post on an EU server, accessed from another EU server, is moderated by our benevolent Big Brother in Trumpland, by the way? I know it just warms the cockles of my heart. So much sovereignty! But I digress…)

So @_elena calls them out (someone has to while @EUCommission is busy preparing for their honeymoon after expressing their undying devotion to W Social recently on every social platform¹):

Anna Zeiter – W CEO, Stanford’s own, and ex-eBay executive (such sovereignty) – replies with this absolute zinger:

Read that as many times as you like until it really sinks in.

These incompetent clowns (dangerous competent clowns but incompetent clowns nevertheless) make people go through a ridiculous 13-step identity verification stage² and then… umm… you get to choose whatever identity you want.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re incompetent. It would be worse if they were competent, given they’re a closed-source venture-capital-funded startup determined to prove your identity.

But, what I want to know is this: Why has @EUCommission embraced a proprietary, closed-source, corporate ghost town with 14,300 accounts, 90% of which have not posted even once (in other words, with only 1,259 accounts that have ever posted)⁴ when there is a thriving non-corporate fediverse with millions of active people on it.

Could it have anything to do with identity verification, surveillance, and control?

And if so, why can’t they even get that right?

Looking forward to seeing how long @EUCommission can drag the corpse of W Social around before people realise it’s dead.

Oh, and how does this make the whole “European alternatives” thing look? Not good. Not because there aren’t excellent European alternatives but because the folks at the commission are either too clueless or too corrupt to recognise and support them.

Needless to say, do not sign up for W or give them your ID information no matter how simple they eventually manage to make it.

You simply don’t need to.

You’re already in a far superior – non-corporate, federated – space.

Do not sign up for W. And warn your friends.

The only time you have any power to stop this is now. If they succeed in gaining network effects, you will be as powerless to stop them as you are with X.

And yes, they’re just another venture capital funded surveillance capitalist, people farmer, and burgeoning Nazi Bar. They just happen to be based in the EU. (As Nazi Bars traditionally have been.)

First of all what is “culture”?

We humans have borders that divide us into tribes. The rules of the division are not always clear. Language? But USA and Australia speak the same language…
Same is the case for South Africa, England, Sudan, Botswana, Nigeria, Singapore, Namibia or Ghana. And some 100 more tribes:

French? Some 50 tribes speak French!

The fact is that there are many tribes that speak the same language yet their cultures can be totally different.

So what makes a “culture” is a soup of traditions, beliefs, religion, food, knowledge, art, clothing style, humor, sport, and so on.

A cluster of values that makes a group of people a bit different from another.

In that sense cultures are not only limited by borders and tribes, but they can form around a topic of interest such as gaming, movies, even celebrities.

DISPERSION

Many people ask me why I have accounts on multiple diaspora* pods (I currently have seven). When the project launched in 2010, and then passed into community hands in 2012, I was heavily involved, primarily working on translating the interface. I was then absent for an extended period and am now (as I like to say) coming home.
The truth is, since diaspora* is a federated and decentralized network, each pod’s database grows from user interaction. The more interactions there are between users from different pods, the greater the reach of each published post.
I know it’s part of my obsession and my love for diaspora*, but it’s also a way to quietly improve the network.
So don’t worry if I follow you from multiple accounts. :)

Mucha gente me pregunta por qué tengo cuentas en varios pods de diaspora* (actualmente tengo siete). Cuando se lanzó el proyecto en 2010, y luego pasó a manos de la comunidad en 2012, estuve muy involucrado trabajando principalmente en la traducción de la interfaz. Luego estuve ausente un tiempo prolongado y ahora estoy (como me gusta decir) volviendo a casa.
Lo cierto es que, al ser diaspora* una red federada y descentralizada, la base de datos de cada pod se nutre de la interacción entre los usuarios. Cuando mayor cantidad de interacciones haya entre usuarios de distintos pods, mayor será la dispersión de cada post publicado.
Sé que es parte de mi locura y de mi amor por diaspora*, pero también es una forma de mejorar la red de manera silenciosa.
Así que no se preocupen si los sigo desde varias cuentas. :)

Interestingly, Meta has been implementing a "tune your algorithm" type of feature, which is surprisingly user-focused. You can select the topics you want to see more of and what you want to see less of, mute words, add your preferences... of course, Meta has their own agenda and wants you to get as hooked as possible so they can make money off you as a product, but I like the idea that it is not completely opaque.

I am building something similar in my Mastodon instance but truly without any monetary goal.

For algorithm haters out there, remember that reverse chronological order is an algorithm too. If you like getting video recommendations on YouTube, PeerTube, or music recommendations in a playlist, that is an algorithm too. I honestly do not understand all the algorithm hate when it is focused on the tech itself rather than commercialism.

The capitalist nature of algorithms is, of course, something to stand against, since it works by exploiting users. But if it is for user benefit without any rotten backstory, algorithms in my world are great.

A tip for users of our experimental instance mementomori.social:

You can enable the algorithmic "For you" feed from the top right corner of the Home feed. When you turn it on, it will instantly switch to a ranked feed that prioritizes posts based on who you follow, who you comment on, and what you like or boost. If you also toggle on "Include posts from people you don't follow," you'll see trending content across the Fediverse based on your interests.

Unlike Trending tab, For you -feed is personal. The logic is similar to pre-Musk Twitter but user-focused and not corporate-owned.

The Trending tab remains unchanged, and /explore shows posts from roughly the past 6-12 hours, with a strong focus on the most recent ones. A post that gets massive engagement might stick around a bit longer, but most cycle out within half a day. Your own For you page changes every time you click the menu, refresh the page, or return.

Canvas 2026 is in one week!

Hello Fediverse! I've come bearing some great news, Canvas 2026 starts in one week!

What?

If you haven't heard, Canvas is a collaborative pixel event that runs yearly, exclusively for the Fediverse. You will have 48 hours to make your mark on an art piece, one pixel at a time. This year the pixel cooldown will be 30 seconds flat, but you can stack up 6 pixels at a time so you don't have to wait ages for pixels.

How do I login?

When you login to Canvas it'll prompt you to identify yourself using fediverse-auth, which involves sending a DM to your account to verify who you are (or logging in with your client of choice, if your app supports it)
