Peru has created the Aguas Calientes Maquia Regional Conservation Area, protecting 981.6 km² of Amazonian forests, wetlands and rivers after a campaign that kicked off in 2013.
The reserve safeguards the Maquía River and Chunuya stream, and strengthens protection for Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation.
