Back in winter 2019, when Twitter was still a thing, I posted my surprising find of the first hedgehog active in July in the South Island of NZ. At least, that was the first hedgehog I'd seen in July, and the first on #iNaturalist

I've been mapping and counting all roadkill hedgehogs I've seen since 2003 on my bike commute to work, so seeing one in July for the first time meant it was something unusual. Until then, all the hedgehogs had been hibernating by July.

You can probably sense where this is going.

Fast forward to today, 17 July 2025, and I saw a dead hedgehog on the road while biking into work that had been killed overnight. #iNaturalistNZ now has 32 observations of hedgehogs in July from the South Island, with all the active/fresh ones since 2019.

Winter isn't what it used to be, and that is changing nature.

Leonotis nepetifolia aka Lions Ears aka Wille Dagga which translated means Wild Cannabis. It is indigenous to South Africa
The petals are psychoactive but less strong than cannabis. The plant was used by the San hunter gatherer people of Southern Africa in their trance dance rituals.
The plants are not legally restricted and are found in many suburban gardens. Surprisingly it became a very popular plant during COVID lockdown

A few fruit bodies of the green wood cup mushroom (Chlorociboria aeruginascens) growing off of a nursery log. This mushroom is a bright blue/green, and grows in small cup/saucer shaped fruits. While this is my first time seeing the fruit bodies of this mushroom in person, I have often found pieces of blue stained wood on hikes, which is caused by the same mushroom. Also known as "Green Oak," the stained wood is prized for woodworking.
A gooey looking white jelly fungus (Ductifera pululahuana) hanging out on a moss covered log. The mushroom is a light off white color and has lots of wrinkles and folds. One of the wrinkles makes a perfect heart shape!
Three tiny Black-stalked Marasmius mushrooms (Tetrapyrgos nigripes) growing out of a decaying twig. There are three mushrooms growing from shortest to tallest left to right. The bottom stems of the mushroom are a darker color, but the upper part of the stem and caps are bright white. There are tiny water drops on the edges of the caps.

Los Yébenes - another random small village where we stayed for 2 or so nights. Nothing eventful, but we discovered this little trick to know when the water tank is full when filling up with water. The weather was still cold and kinda rainy.
