2nd day of the Memorial Cup happened yesterday, and it was exciting as hell.
Everett Silvertips beat Chicoutimi Sangueneens, but it wasn’t easy. Lots of energy, big hits, and highlight reel goals.
This was Everett’s first win ever at the Memorial Cup.
I am endlessly fascinated by Great Britain at the IIHF Men’s Hockey Championships because they’re truly the worst team in the tournament.
After six games, they’ve only scored four goals!
And they were just blanked 6-0 by Latvia, who aren’t exactly a powerhouse themselves. But compared to Great Britain, they’re practically Canada.
The British should be embarrassed but I doubt most Brits even realize this is happening.
Norway just pulled off a shocking upset by beating Sweden at the IIHF Men’s World Championships.
People were clowning on Canada for beating Norway in overtime—and that this was a sign Canada’s in long term decline.
But look at this. Norway beat Sweden in regulation. So really, Norway’s overtime loss to Canada is just a sign that they now have a serious #hockey team.
Norway 3-2 Sweden
Just want to point out that if Canada ever lost to Latvia in any #hockey tournament, people would be calling for the coach’s head.
This is no slight to Latvia.
But if you’re Canada, the expectation is that you win every game even if it’s the B or C squad.
If you lose *at all*, it will be to USA, Czechia, Sweden, Finland, or Switzerland. Maybe an upset from Germany would be tolerated. Maybe.
But you definitely can’t lose to the likes of Norway, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, or Great Britain. If Canada loses to those teams, that’s a national crisis.

How does USA win the Olympic gold medal in men’s #hockey and then lose to Latvia in the IIHF Men’s World Championship—both in the same year?!
USA has only won one game in the IIHF Men’s World Championship.
And yet they can plausibly still make it out of Group A stage because they have more points than Germany, Hungary, Latvia, and Great Britain.
This must be really suck for Norway because they just played the game of their lives at the IIHF Men’s World Championships—and almost beat Canada.
But Canada being Canada never lets up. And beats them 6-5 in overtime.

Many people tell me they profoundly dislike Britta Curl-Salemme.
At first, I thought it was because she’s a dirty player. Which she is.
But apparently, she’s also quite anti-LGBTQ+. Which is a hell of a stance to have when a good many #PWHL fans are LGBTQ+.
WHAT A MOMENT!
Seeing the Montréal Victoire holding the Walter Cup is so special.
MARIE-PHILIP POULIN HOISTING THE WALTER CUP!!!
Until tonight, no Canadian pro #hockey team has won a major championship in 33 years. Last time, it was 1993 when the Montréal Canadians won the Stanley Cup.
But tonight, the Montréal Victoire broke the curse by hoisting the Walter Cup!
I’m so glad it was these women who did it. And how fitting it was a Montréal team too!
MONTRÉAL VICTOIRE WIN THE WALTER CUP!!!
First Canadian team to do it!
What a game! What a series! Both teams putting it all out there!
Montréal Victoire 4-0 Ottawa Charge
2 minutes left in the gameand empty net for Ottawa Charge!
Lina Ljungblom seals the deal for Montréal Victoire with a deke in front of the net.
Or it should seal the deal. I’ll eat my hat if Ottawa Charge come back.
Montréal Victoire 4-0 Ottawa Charge
OH. MY. GOD.
Bomb from the blue line gets Montréal Victoire their 3rd goal! Maggie Flaherty with a beautiful slap shot!
Ottawa has no answer so far and time is running out!
Montréal Victoire 3-0 Ottawa Charge
Well, that’s wild!
Short-handed goal from Abby Roque which gets Marie-Philip Poulin out of the penalty box! Jail break!
Less than 10 minutes left! Can Ottawa actually pull a rabbit out of a hat like they did last time? Or are they cooked?!
Montréal Victoire 2-0 Ottawa Charge
End of 2nd period.
Game is way more interesting as Ottawa Charge pours on the pressure and just doesn’t let up. Montréal Victoire goalie Ann Renée Desbiens has been a wall. But will she break?
Montréal Victoire 1-0 Ottawa Charge
GOOOOOAL!
Montréal Victoire opens up the scoring Abby Roque finding the back of the net. Scored at 4:32 of the 2nd period.
And now Ottawa Charge can’t play so conservatively and needs to take more chances.
Montréal Victoire 1-0 Ottawa Charge
Scoreless 1st period.
Neither team is getting shots off, and the shots they do get off are from the back end—so tend to be low quality. Very defensive right now, and I don’t blame them since it’s coming down to the wire.
I’ve locked Ottawa’s chances, though.
Montréal Victoire 0-0 Ottawa Charge
Game 4 of the #PWHL Finals is happening now!
Montréal Victoire is leading the series 2-1 and are one game away from winning the Walter Cup Finals.
But every game has been close, and Ottawa Charge staved off elimination on Monday. They are a gritty team that never quits.
And I’m doing a live thread today!
US men’s national #hockey team is not looking like Olympic gold medallists.
Finland just beat them 6-2 in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. They’re now 1-2, having only beaten 17th ranked Great Britain and losing to Switzerland.
16,894 fans showed up for Game 3 of the Walter Cup Finals!
#PWHL is on the map! The country is mad for women’s #hockey!

That’s the game! Ottawa Charge wins! They fight another day!
Montréal Victoire fans, keep your chin up. This wouldn’t have been a good day to win the Walter Cup anyway since the Canadiens are playing a Game 7 right now. Your team deserves the main stage and doesn’t deserve to be upstaged anyway.
Charge are down by the centre ice, saluting fans. They deserved this win. Every goal was earned.
This has been an epic Walter Cup!
Montréal Victoire 1-2 Ottawa Charge
Every single game in the Walter Cup Final has been close as hell and a nail biter!
Now Desbiens goes to the bench for an extra Montréal attacker!
WHOOOOOOA!!! 😲
Ottawa just scored with 54.8 seconds left in the third period! Almost gets disallowed by officials but it sticks!
Rebecca Leslie gets it in past Montreal Victoire goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens.
Might they actually win this game?!
Montreal Victoire 1-2 Ottawa Charge
OH! MY! GOD!
Ottawa finally scored with 5:30 left in the 3rd period!
Peyton Hemp bangs it in right off a rebound! She gives the Charge some life!
Montreal Victoire 1-1 Ottawa Charge
When I first started talking about #PWHL three years ago, few people gave a damn about pro women’s #hockey.
And now we’ve made a bustling community on the #Fediverse, full of people rooting on the Walter Cup Finals.
However this game goes, remember that.

MONTREAL SCORED!
Midway through the 3rd period, Hayley Scamurra finally gets one past Ottawa goalie Gwyneth Philips!
Victoire just over 12 minutes away from glory!
End of 2nd period. Still scoreless. Lots of battling but no team has come up lucky.
Montreal Victoire 0-0 Ottawa Charge
1st period done.
Still scoreless. But each of these goalies are insanely good.
The shots Gwyneth Philip’s faced were wild. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a goalie goddess.
Pro female #hockey goalies must be better than male counterparts.
For example, Ottawa Charge goalie Gwyneth Philips has a .955 save percentage.
That’s ungodly performance.
This year’s Memorial Cup will be epic.
All four teams are stacked.
