Yesterday’s White House stunt had all the hallmarks of Trump corruption, but there was something else, too—an air of desperation. It was a tacit admission that the protests are working and that Musk and Trump are rattled enough by current sentiment that they’re willing to turn the South Lawn into a showroom. Watching Musk clam up on Fox Business or quietly idle next to Trump in front of the White House, it’s even easier than normal to see past Musk’s trademark bullshitting and bluster. These moments make clear that this time, Musk has wagered the only thing he can’t easily buy back—the very myth he created for himself.

The proximate primary goal of #TeslaTakedown is to reduce demand for Tesla’s product. Lower demand → lower price → lower margins → lower profit. Anything that increases their financial liabilities is a bonus (e.g. overload of used vehicles from broken leases that they can’t sell), but reducing demand is the name of the game.
If Tesla becomes an unprofitable company, and a company that simply cannot become profitable as long as it has the Musk millstone around its neck, then (1) the stock tanks and (2) having Musk in charge becomes a liability.

The memo still hasn’t made it to everyone about the systemic function of the #TeslaTakedown protests. I still keep getting well-meaning quesitons like the one below from @tymwol.
The purpose is •not• just to register symbolic discontent. The purpose is •not• just to take individual action that directly harms Musk.
The purpose is to tank demand for Tesla’s product, and thus tank their stock price. This is Musk’s biggest vulnerability, Smaug’s exposed belly.

OK, from the replies, some useful tidbits:
- To end a Tesla lease early, you don’t have to pay the full amount remaining — only the balance •minus• the car’s current resale value.
- Cars depreciate, so you’ll lose some money. But…
- …if the used market is dropping fast, Tesla’s official resale value will probably lag behind reality. Thus breaking a lease actually •can• take money straight out of Tesla’s pockets.
- To maximize this strategy, people should break their leases •soon• and •simultaneously•. Coordinate a campaign!
Would still really, really, really like somebody with professional expertise to work all this out.
