If you're interested in setting up a secure chat service for you and your friends, you might want to try @snikket_im
It's really cheap to run and easy to set up, it's managed hosting so you don't need to do techy stuff.
Technical details: it runs on XMPP with OMEMO end-to-end encryption, but this is hidden behind non-technical branding so it doesn't scare people.
Instances are federated, Snikket and other types of XMPP instance can communicate.

The one thing that I just fail to get, is that federation needs to be explained to people, when it's a concept that pretty much everyone is familiar with.
Have a (mobile) phone? You're federating. Have an email address? You're federating. Have an internet connection? That's federated.
People understand that you don't have to be on the same (mobile) phone network, with the same email provider, the same ISP, in order to communicate with others. Many daily services work, regardless of the provider you're with, where you can pick and choose and leave, without anything changing.
So why is it so insanely difficult to apply this concept to #XMPP messaging or anything on the #Fediverse?
It drives me crazy sometimes.

**Important consideration if you are running a XMPP server.**
If you are using Ejabberd you need to be at least on 25.08 or have mod_s2s_dialback enabled until you can upgrade. Otherwise your connection to other XMPP servers will fail.

Let's Encrypt is making changes to the certificates it issues from 11th February. This has some impact on the XMPP network.No action required for Prosody operators. Operators of servers running ejabberd need to make sure they are running version 25.08 or later.

We engage with decentralization protocols a lot (many nerds love to) but make no mistake: in the end, the app needs to work and be easy to use. #deltachat is a cross-platform FOSS offering, with guaranteed security levels, close to user expectations ... major factors in driving adoption!
True, the email system is not necessarily better than #xmpp ... but please compare with chatmail.at which is fast, ephemeral and secure, with delta inherently being a peer-to-peer E2EE messenger :)

Another (second) release of siltamesh, my simple bridge between XMPP and the meshtastic network.
Reliability has been improved, and now you can store the received locations of local mesh nodes. The locations can even be displayed online with @umap, a great OSM-based online map.

!Friendica Support on what is the state of #xmpp in friendica? pirati.ca The database version is 1587/1587, the post update version is 1550/1550 does have the add-on.
When enabled "toggle chat" is shown in the bottom right. But only sometimes and then it's gone again. Tried to login with username@pirati.ca + pw but that fails. So now I am wondering which password would be expected? The xmpp address was pre-filled.
