There are no known security issues with "Siacs OMEMO" / OMEMO v0.3ΒΉ despite of what some very loud Signal fans would like you to believe. It has been audited by a third partyΒ² who took a longer look at it than all of the Signal fans combined.
Yes, #OMEMO v0.7+ (or TWOMEMO π) is a cleaner spec with more features (most notably Stanza Content Encryption). Thatβs why we wrote it. Iβm a co-author. That doesnβt mean v0.3 is insecure.

OMEMO Encryption
This specification defines a protocol for end-to-end encryption in one-on-one chats that may have multiple clients per account.Andreas Straub
#XSF Announcement
Today the #XMPP Standards Foundation publishes an Open Letter to urge #Meta to adopt XMPP for messaging #interoperability.
Itβs time for real interoperability. Letβs make it happen.

#Signal is #centralized - just like #Twitter, #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Threema, etc - and therefore exactly as vulnerable to #enshittification. Its popularity also makes it a tempting target for backdoors.
I urge people to use #XMPP instead, which is #federated like the Fediverse and has no single point of failure. It uses the same end-to-end encryption algorithm as Signal.

Quicksy is a great #Jabber / #XMPP service (with Android and iOS clients), which is trivially easy to join. Uses phone numbers for registration.

@prav is a fork of Quicksy with only an Android client for now, but with message moderation and retraction support, a #cooperative structure, and better customer support.

@debacle @thevril @pluralistic we need to own our means of communication. So we can guarantee itβs not being tampered with. And as such it can only be built on free and open standards.

IMO, it is the chief requisite of maintaining its individual freedom!

Thank you for the clarification. I did state (at least in the convo mentioned) that #XMPP is (but) a protocol.
The FOSS messenger(s) based on it, however, to my knowledge, are but niche apps for the technologically savvy.--No-one of my RL contacts has ever mentioned it (no a represantive sample, OFC.)

If you wanted to dig down even further, you'd get to the point where you'd have to deal with #Protocols:

@HistoPol@mastodon.social @smallcircles@social.coop Sweet! :-) For those who do not know, XMPP is a protocol (similar to the ActivityPub protocol being used by various fediverse services) that has many client applications.ETR

... I've pointed out in an older thread 𧡠here and Cory @pluralistic in a now famous speech about #Enshittification, there's the severe lock-in effect, the negative aspects of the #NetworkEffect.
There are #XMPP and #Matrix, the "ancient" and "obvious" #FOSS choices. I've never used them but from what I've read, they were never able to gain much market share and are...
