Very interesting insight from Gabriel Zucman: there is now an international movement for taxing wealth, and important initiatives are afoot. The most important of all is prop 40, California's proposed one-time five per cent tax wealth. It is projected to yield 100 billion dollars! That's as much as one year of income produced in California.

I knew the various law proposals etc., but I was not seeing the big picture.

“If you destroy nature, you destroy the core on which our economies depend. And that got people’s attention. This is not some kind of a flower-power, tree-hugging exercise. This is core economics. This is core financial stability, core price stability.”

Frank Elderson, a member of the European Central Bank’s executive board

Excellent!

I swear, every city needs a medina, a cheap mixed-use neighborhood where people can open tiny 2m × 2m shops that specialize in fixing zippers. Or sharpening kitchen knives. Or replacing shoe heels. You can get those services now, of course, but only at ruinous cost, because every shop has to pay thousands of dollars a month in rent on a high street. More tiny kiosks on narrow streets, sez I.
