Hygrocybe Firma
Hygrocybe firma is a fungus whose very small, red sporing bodies appear in Tasmanian forests in autumn. It has a biotrophic relationship with surrounding vegetation, where the mycelium lives inside or in close contact with plant roots. The red colour pops amid the forest greens, often making for lovely colour compositions.

A dozen shelf mushrooms, ranging in size from 5-10 inches and an inch high, grow from the bottom of a dead hemlock. The mushrooms are quite fresh. Their colors bright and glistening. The inner attachment to the bark of the tree are a deep brown/red, transitioning to yellow and then to a creamy white at the edges. In most of the mushrooms the edges are somewhat billowy at the edges and more sunken toward the tree.
