🚨South Carolina House Passes New Map Aimed at Forcing Out Clyburn🚨

The #SouthCarolina House passed a congressional map that aims to eliminate the seat now held by #JamesClyburn, a powerful #Black #Democrat.

The map will eliminate the state’s ONLY Democratic seat at the urging of #Trump.

Among the changes is a significant shift of the Sixth District currently represented by Democratic power broker James E. Clyburn.

The conservative majority, meanwhile, already diluted enforcement power with an April decision that struck down a majority #Black congressional district in #Louisiana & made future cases much harder to win.

In that case, #SCOTUS’ conservative majority ruled a map relied too heavily on race with a district aimed at giving Black voters a chance to elect a candidate of their choice. The decision effectively limited #VotingRights claims to maps that are intentionally designed to discriminate.

#Alabama officials pointed to the #Louisiana case as reason for #SCOTUS to end a judicial order to use a court-imposed #House map until after the 2030 census. SCOTUS overturned that order & directed a lower court to reconsider the case in light of the Louisiana decision. That could free the state to instead use a map approved in 2023 by the #Republican-led legislature that includes only 1 district where #Black residents comprise a majority.

#SCOTUS set the stage for #Alabama to get rid of 1 of 2 largely #Black congressional districts before this year’s #midterms, creating an opening for #Republicans to gain an additional #US #House seat in a closely divided chamber.

The decision follows a SCOTUS ruling that struck down a majority-Black US House district in #Louisiana as an “unconstitutional” #RacialGerrymander, significantly weakening the federal #VotingRights Act.
