Happy to share the latest manuscript from our lab, in which we propose that eukaryotes evolved from a genomic chimera of Asgard archaea and giant viruses.

This is a controversial topic, but we believe we have strong evidence to suggest a critical viral role in eukaryogenesis.

Two lifeforms merge in once-in-a-billion-years evolutionary event
Scientists have discovered that a once-in-a-billion-years evolutionary event is underway, as two lifeforms have merged into one organism that boasts abilities its peers would envy. Last time this happened, Earth got plants.Michael Irving (New Atlas)
Many people have learned that horses first came to the Americas when Spanish explorers brought them here about 500 years ago.
But fossils show horses have been in North America for centuries, including during the Americas during the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

Horses lived in the Americas for millions of years – new research helps paleontologists understand the fossils we’ve found and those that are missing from the record
Horse fossils are abundant and widespread across North America. Scientists often use their long history to illustrate how species evolve in response to a changing environment. The Conversation
I am looking for candidates for 2-years #postdoc position, working on my #ERC project, developing a new statistical method to infer the distribution of the effect sizes of QTL. More information here :

Post-Doc: Development of a new method to study the distribution of the effect sizes of QTL
We offer a 2-years position, working as post-doctoral fellow to improve our ability to study the genetic architecture of complex traits, by developing a new method to study the distribution of the effect sizes of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL).EURAXESS

And then there is also yet another ethical dimension, that of #fascist #eugenics. Who decides who will live or what will be procreated #IVF and then carried to term by an #ArtificialWomb?

The largest-ever study of #bird genomes has produced a remarkably clear picture of the bird family tree.
The study shows that most of the modern groups of #birds first appeared within 5 million years after the extinction of the #dinosaurs.
The new family tree overturns some previous ideas about bird relationships, while also revealing some new groupings.

After 10 years of work, landmark study reveals new ‘tree of life’ for all birds living today
The extinction of the dinosaurs sparked an explosion of bird species, according to the largest-ever study of bird genetics. The Conversation
