May 16th is 'Tabi-no-hi' (旅の日 'Travel Day'), celebrating the day in 1689 that Matsuo Bashō (松尾芭蕉) set off on his epic journey across Japan.

His experiences and poetry would be immortalized in 'Oku-no-Hosomichi' (奥の細道 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North'.
