@klim advocates for describing a typeface as a material: https://klim.co.nz/blog/a-typeface-is-not-a-tool/. ATF agreed (in 1902):

“Ads that Vibrate: You can’t build them up from poor materials any more than you could construct a superior violin from inferior woods. It’s all in the material.”
