Stopped by Christie Pits on my way back from a dentist appointment today. Wasn't really expecting to find much given how much foot traffic and how little "wild" space there is, but to my astonishment there were a few different kinds of bees making burrows in sandy patches on the sunny hillside!

There were fluffy white-and-black mining bees (skittish, hard to get photos) and smaller, more docile metallic olive-green sweat bees.

First damselfly sighting this year!

And hallelujah I actually got it in focus. 😂

I have the hardest time photographing damselflies. They're just so tiny. So I end up arguing w the camera, trying to convince it that yes, there *really is* something there to focus on!

[Side note: I need to learn how to use the manual settings on my camera. Someday lol.]

A gloriously beautiful fly that looks a bit like a bee on white flowers with green foliage in the background. The fly has a plump body with sunflower yellow and black stripes and big black eyes and thick blunt antennae in the shape of a V on its head. The thorax is mostly black with yellow stripes going in the opposite direction. Its two wings are resting closed together and are translucent reddish brown. The legs are long, thin and reddish towards the tarsi and yellow near the abdomen. The flowers are clustered very close together on a stalk and have thin white petals that seem haphazardly arranged, green stamens, long thin filaments and yellow anthers. There are small leaflets poking out from under the flower cluster.

The legs are long, thin and reddish towards the tarsi and yellow near the abdomen. The flowers are closely packed together on a stem with thin white petals looking like they’re barely hanging on to the green star-shaped cup center.

Invaders from underground are coming in cicada-geddon. It’s the biggest bug emergence for North America in centuries.

AP reports: "Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar."
