There have been exactly two innovations in web browsers in the last 16 years:

1. "Show Reader Automatically" in 2010;
2. "Hide Distracting Items" in 2024.

Everything else has either been a waste of goddamned time, or actively malicious. Mostly the latter.

I miss the clock widget on Mosaic. It really helped me not waste an *entire* night on the WWW.

Ah. Seems to be a standard feature on Firefox and Safari on my machines?

3. Vimperator extension for Firefox (can't remember the year). Using vim keys for absolutely everything was a boost.

Tridactyl is carrying the torch the best it can with new limitations on the browser.

Hey #Mozilla, we'd really like a "hide distracting items" feature for #Firefox too!

Mozilla: More AI bullshit, coming right up!

Vivaldi is experimenting with tiling tabs, which looks interesting. Those guys are probably worth watching, as they don't waste their time with slop.

I have never thought to hide website footers, thanks for that idea.

Love that the example is the Macalope! I feel like there used to be more semi-mainstream curmudgeonly tech critics, but he’s almost the last ungulate standing.

I quite enjoy the native media player replacing Flash/QT/WMP embeds, and the control that comes with that (os level play/pause, picture in picture, etc). Though YouTube has been actively working to sabotage that functionality on their site.
