Threads not having true connection with Fediverse and that they promised full connection by the end of the year. It's the end of the year and they keep making these half inch changes that never get *fully* there in terms of how federation actually works.

@BeAware Ah yeah. I mean I think theres "reasons" why they are rolling it out slowly, but you know, you KNOW there will be a compromise (or slew of compromises) somewhere. I never really expected a full, no-compromise implementation of AP, but I think if they can get it to a state where people there can really follow and respond to people here, then that's pretty good. Super double bonus points if they actually allow people to move from Threads to traditional Fedi, bringing their following along
in reply to shellsharks

they haven't done any of their features true to AP yet, so I'm still waiting on that so far. Even for them to follow us, they have to see a comment from us in reply to one of their posts. They can't just search us up. It's weird as hell.
in reply to BeAware :fediverse:

@BeAware Yeah I see what you mean. Just poked around and wrote this up...

shellsharks.social/@shellshark…

Yeah, SUPER weak display of interoperation here. Almost embarrassing how limited it is…

and by "did it”, I mean so far they've done the barest of minimums here. From what I can tell, this new “advance” has the following limitations

- You can only follow fedi accounts that have responded to something you've posted from Threads
- You cant search for fedi accounts
- You can't reply to or repost stuff from Fedi
- You can't link to your fedi profile in a Threads post
- You don't see fedi accounts you're following your following list
- I don't see my Fedi posts in my Threads timeline

🤦‍♂️

Yeah, I'll call "did it" when all those are checked off, and when you can migrate your account like they initially promised. I am completely out of good will with them—and I started off with way more than they deserved.
in reply to Taggart :donor:

@mttaggart my theory to why theyre doing this is, it gets Fediverse users talking about threads and how bad interoperability is. Their hope is that every time they do another thing that's just not quite right, people will talk about it a lot and some will just go there out of frustration for the lack of interoperability.🤦‍♂️
in reply to BeAware :fediverse:

@BeAware I see where you're coming from, but I feel like this assumes a "swing voter" in Fedi that just doesn't exist in any large numbers? Like, who is still here that is mulling over Threads at this point? If any platform is gonna get a Fedi user, it's Bluesky, interop be damned.
in reply to Taggart :donor:

@mttaggart we are threads' connection to BlueSky...because of BridgyFed, threads gets federated there. Just something to note.
in reply to BeAware :fediverse:

@BeAware @mttaggart Hmm..

I think a threads post *could* be boosted by a Fedi account that would then be bridged to Bsky via Bridgy Fed.

But I don't think it's possible for a Threads account to bridge themselves to Bsky because up until recently, they haven't been able to follow the @bsky.brid.gy account. And even now, they could only follow it, if that account explicitly responded to one of their posts, which I'm pretty sure hasn’t/won't happen. So still impossible I think…

in reply to Taggart :donor:

@mttaggart @BeAware Yeah, I think the only people excited about Threads <—> Fedi interoperability are (in this order)...

1. Evan Prodromou
2. Evan Prodromou
3. Fedi-native *creators* who wouldn't mind access to the large audience that Threads would bring
4. Other random #openweb folks
5. People who would love to be parts of communities that aren't represented well here (i.e. sports, local groups, etc)

Yeah, I listed Evan twice 🤣

Kinda don't see too many folks leaving for threads at this point

in reply to shellsharks

@mttaggart there's some topics that aren't represented well here that I'd enjoy being able to converse about with some threads users.
in reply to BeAware :fediverse:

@BeAware @mttaggart Yeah same, which is why I consider myself part of group 5. But i certainly wouldn't LEAVE Fedi for this reason.
