ICYMI: yesterday I published the 6th post in my series #TheFutureIsFederated, showing how interoperability works between #Mastodon & #Pixelfed. In short: it feels like magic ๐ชโจ
An excerpt:
ยซ The Fediverse has so much potential and is so much more sophisticated than anything made available by Meta, TikTok and X. But more importantly: not only is it technically superior, it is also ethical and user-centric. ยป

Distributed Press ( @distributed ) is drafting a new FEP for #ActivityPub for "Peer-to-peer Identities". The general gist is that objects (such as Actors and content) can link to alternate versions of themselves, which can be hosted elsewhere, such as #IPFS. If the server goes down, data can be served from there instead.
You can read the draft proposal here: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/commit/3efef8bffd9581a116135be4953ccb2ebdf4f482/fep/1024/fep-1042.md

I kinda really hate that Eugen is making his favorite activity of censoring people on Fedi, easier for other admins to join in as well...๐คฌ
The hidden notifications "feature" for silenced users with no workaround to see who is trying to interact with you is toxic as fuck!๐
Open web, my ass. More like, "only open for me and people I like".
Anyone having this problem with Mastodon?
On my instance by @stux the version is v4.3.0-alpha.5 and can't follow back user
When I click on follow back it is showing message "are you sure you want to unfollow"

The more I learn about the #Fediverse and #ActivityPub, the more flawed and broken it feels.
Biggest flaw: Comments are not properly federated. If no one from my instance is following the person replying, I don't get to see it. Why wasn't this fixed until now? Can this even be fixed?
This makes this place feel way more dead than it actually is.
It's not surprising that #BlueSky chose to develop their own protocol(#ATProto) because they saw the flaws and the refusal to fix them.
@pfefferle Yes. #WordPress (https://wordpress.org) links to their #Instagram account on the homepage: https://www.instagram.com/wordpress
In turn, their official handle links to their #Threads account.
Someone in the WordPress foundation needs to contact #Meta & have their account verified & activate #ActivityPub on their Threads account.
They also need to install the ActivityPub plugin so we can follow updates from the #Fediverse.

OK folks, we need to stop assuming #Mastodon is the entire #Fediverse and expecting its idiosyncrasies to be mandated on everyone else.
There's no such thing as a "CW" in #ActivityPub. A Note
can have a summary
and a content
and if Mastodon wants to display the summary and hide the content that's its problem. There are so many examples of this. Please stop screaming at people just because you think they've failed some kind of Mastodon purity test on an ActivityPub network when they're following the rules of their instance.
Is there a command similar to Mastodon's "tootctl self destruct" for Pixelfed?
Would like to "cleanly" delete the instance, if possible.

>> But ActivityPub is also largely underspecified
> ActivityPub is not underspecified. โฆ It is a protocol for building all kinds of decentralized social applications.
Which results in it being underspecified for any specific application (especially if interop is a goal). But itโs an interesting spin. As others have noted over the years, #ActivityPub more of a sketch or outline of an idea than a protocol.

Having second thoughts about creating a #Fediverse platform. I was not aware of the levels of toxicity on #Mastodon by users (even admins) who don't understand how federation protocols work and harass developers with false accusations and even uploading child porn to their websites to get them in legal trouble. No, thank you.

So, I've been trying to get this Pixelfed instance hooked up with Backblaze object storage.
I host it with Elest.io because it's managed and I'm not too versed in linux, though I get by.
When I started the instance and messed around in the Admin UI, I noticed these "cloud storage" settings, which I filled out as such. (First pic) but it kept giving me an error about the credentials being incorrect (they're not, i copied them directly from backblaze)
Then, while trying to get help for that, someone told me to edit the ENV with these options:
## S3 Configuration
PF_ENABLE_CLOUD=true
FILESYSTEM_CLOUD=s3
AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=
AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=
AWS_DEFAULT_REGION=
AWS_BUCKET=
AWS_URL=
AWS_ENDPOINT=
But, when I go to my ENV file. Some of those options aren't even there. (second pic).
Can I just insert them at the bottom and put the info in there, and it would work?
Also, for AWS_URL and AWS_ENDPOINT, do I need to include https://?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Last Week in #fediverse and #bluesky - ep 77
The news this week:
- Dutch government plans to expand their #Mastodon project
- Nomadic Identity (decoupling user identity from servers) over #activitypub comes to the fediverse
- @openvibe combines Mastodon, #nostr and now Bluesky into a single app and a single feed.

A relay of the entire Bluesky network can be run for $153/month. Thatโs mighty impressive!
Many #ActivityPub hosters are paying this amount for member counts in the low thousands.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.56 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes (all of them contributions by fellow developers):
Don't show instance announcements in public timelines (contributed by sarahpw).
Added auto boosting. If an account has this flag enabled, all mentions to that account are automatically boosted to all its followers (contributed by sarahpw).
Fixed typos in manpages (contributed by sergiodj).
Some minor performance improvements (contributed by Claire).
If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/grunfink
Finally, @ghost has open sourced their #ActivityPub implementation powered by #Fedify! For Fedify users, this means another production-grade example code.

Wow! So I just figured out why Fandom.ink thinks I don't deserve friendships from people on their instance...(had multiple follow relationships that were severed)
It's because I post AI art sometimes and am generally AI positive because it helps me with my day to day life, being disabled...๐
So, thanks for defederating me and breaking my follow relationships without even letting me or my people know beforehand!๐

Kinda strange when people complain about something that's easily explainable and understandable...๐ณ
How can an instance count followers and following from instances it doesn't know about or instances they block? They can't...soooo.....stop complaining? Cause I don't see how it could be done reasonably.
It's like you not knowing every single person in the world. It's not feasible, so stop worrying about it so much....

Considering Threads isn't even a year old, this is enormous progress over anything Twitter ever did.
Jack claims that "Twitter should have been a protocol", but here we're seeing #ActivityPub interop being achieved as we live in breathe.
