Pygopleurus vulpes! A bumblebee scarab beetle, and no matter how often I see these little fuzzballs I still delight in their weirdness. These are literally in our back yard, I feel incredibly lucky to have this kind of thing just forcing itself into my attention. (Northern Greece.) #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography
Close up of two mating beetles. The female has a glittery green thorax, the male’s is glittery red. Both are extremely hairy: the female’s hairs are white and much more prominent to the sides, the males are bright orange and more evenly distributed also on the thorax and elytra.
The same two beetles from further away. This is a more artistic composition including the colour contrast of the yellow dandelion they’re perched on against a green background and the orange and white of their hairy fringes.

A couple of shots of beetle dick for those who appreciate that kind of thing. I’m not sure what’s going on in the second shot, I only saw males in that cluster. Didn’t realise there was any action going on though, and I might well have missed a female under it all. (This is the problem with big-camera macro, sometimes you only realise in post processing there’s something you’d like to investigate further and it’s long too late.) #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography
Mating beetles in profile, the male’s penis is clearly visible. These are again Pygopleurus vulpes the bumblebee scarab beetle, they’re so fuzzy you would believe they were bumblebees if it wasn’t for the extremely scarab-shape antennae.
Male bumblebee scarabs (all orange and fuzzy) but one has its penis extended. It’s not visible where it’s going.
