O&C – ownership and control – *that’s* the lens by which we should be evaluating data and technology.
Who owns and controls data and technology?
If we want a fair, just world with human rights, freedom, and democracy, the answer to that question must be twofold:
1. Data about and technology for the commons must be owned and controlled by the commons.
2. Data about and technology for people must be owned and controlled by individuals.
That’s it.
Notice what’s unnecessary – not to mention antithetical to the stated cause – and thus omitted entirely: “Data and technology should be owned and controlled by corporations.”
That’s only a requirement for the perpetuation of the social cancer that is capitalism, not for the fostering of a humane world.
The fact that nearly all data and technology is owned by corporations today should make you shudder.
Fixing this won’t fix all the world’s problems but neither can we solve the world’s problems without fixing this.
(Because privacy is a fundamental human right that is a prerequisite for all our other human rights and without ownership and control of our data we don’t have privacy in the digital network age and because technology is an amplifier that amplifies the ideas and voices of the people who own and control it.)

in reply to Aral Balkan • • •The trouble with this and with technology is:
1 - #Tech is used for multiple purposes and with multiple people
This creates a fork and multiple reasoning / uses.
Control by individuals ?
- Most can't do it on their own
- Most don't have the money / time
= Most need help - even some #BigTech (at least to start with unless we do #handholding live video #walkthrough time)

therefore
- it's #hard to change that #relationship when the #provider is #State and it's #Companies who by default part collude for free data
and
individuals don't have the skills for servers etc
and
- Who / what would store all this expensive data? (People couldn't do half of what they do now if they pad for it)

MANY #INSTANCES shut down realising the costs to keep it all alive
commonly saying:
"we need some people to pay for space or we shutdown. sorry"

Seems when I ask you a few times about the same post you won't even reply to say you're not going to reply or at least will think about it.
It's weird because I have got some reply in the past but sometimes none on certain things I've asked again for reply or comment.
Just let me know either way because being in the uncertain middle can waste both our time.
Thanks for #Feedback #Reply
