All tools create a path of least resistance. When it comes to AI chatbots, that path is to trust the AI's outputs.

Unfortunately, all LLMs hallucinate. And as users get used to relying on the machine, their ability and willingness to spot these errors deteriorates.

Blaming the user for this is irresponsible. The problem is caused by the way these tools are designed - so it's up to us, as designers, to fix it.

Imagine having a bicycle with a closed chain guard. One day the chain falls off & you realize it's assembled with tamper-proof screws.

Now imagine the manufacturer wanting to make unscrewing that screw a felony carrying a 5-year prison sentence & a $500K fine.

They'd be booed out of business, if not institutionalized.

None the less, that's EXACTLY how DMCA 1201 works.

Despite @pluralistic & others' efforts I feel this isn't clear to the general public.

"Tech companies are the most self-mythologizing industry on the planet, beating out even the pharma sector in boasting about their prowess and good corporate citizenship. People feel more lonely, in part because so many of our relationships are mediated by social media.

Instead of atoning for the harms of his platforms, Mark Zuckerberg has a new tech solution: he’s going to give us all a bunch of Meta-powered AI friends to fill the void left by the lack of real ones. It’s an even more dystopian future.

They may simply be idiots, but remember what @pluralistic keeps pointing out: There are very good material reasons for keeping these claims going even if they know it's complete horseshit.

It's all about the story of infinite growth, because for these companies that story is literally a money printing machine.

Of course you'll never get them to admit they don't belive it; that would reveal that their entire businesses is fraudulent.

"Capitalism has entered a radical and apocalyptic phase. There is no utopian vision in any of this. Instead, there’s a final battle. And this is where it gets really dark. The people who are advancing this agenda are also building their luxury bunkers and their spaceships to Mars. They don’t believe that there is a future. These people believe history is ending, literally."

#TakeItDown Act has passed the #House 409-2 giving #Trump & the #FTC power to #censor the #internet.

However, it will also enable the FTC to demand #content be removed from websites.

🚨In fact, Trump said he will use the bill ON HIS OWN BEHALF, presumably to remove criticism of him from the web.

They're only principles if they make you say no to things that you would like to do. Otherwise, they are just sparkling theater.

What usually happens is that teams say "our principles are Empathy and Usability" while real decisions all happen upstream.

This is not an effective way of working, and will be detrimental in the long term. Real impact requires real #agility, which means delegating decisions downwards via good principles.

This is a perilous moment. Rapid technological advances over the past two decades have made #DataShedding ubiquitous—whether it comes from the devices everyone carries or the platforms we use to communicate with the world. As a society, we produce unfathomable quantities of #information, & that information is easier to collect than ever before.

#Trump #law #privacy #InfoSec #AmericanAutocracy #tech #DOGE #Musk #surveillance

The government has tons of it, some of which is obvious—names, addresses, & census data—& much of which may surprise you. Consider, say, a limited tattoo database, created in 2014 by the National Institute of Standards & Technology, & distributed to multiple institutions for the purpose of training software systems to recognize common tattoos associated with gangs & criminal organizations.

#Trump #law #privacy #InfoSec #AmericanAutocracy #tech #DOGE #Musk #surveillance

That means the govt has at least some ability to map or re-create the past everyday movements of some American citizens. This is hardly even a cursory list of what is publicly known.

Advancements in #AI promise to turn this unwieldy mass of #data & metadata into something easily searchable, politically weaponizable, & maybe even profitable.
