With the worldwide wave of social media bans on major platforms aka digital verification, I wonder if we'll see an influx of people to the #fediverse

๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž Here is hoping โค

#SocialMedia #Privacy #Ageverification #SocialMediaban #new

@bazkie same haha but we must let our ethics overcome our selfishness haha ;)

However local feeds like on smaller instances like beige.party will likely remain the same, as new users probably gonna continue to just go to mastodon.social from joinmastodon.org and ya people followed/following also stay the same?

in reply to MadeInDex ๐Ÿ“ฐ๐ŸŒŽ

welllll yes BUT

if mastodon gets significantly more users, this also increases interest from bad actors, like big corpo with financial interests (think spam, datamining) and governments (think control, digital warfare, propaganda)

this will become a nuisance, it will be hard to keep the boundaries of our bubble(s) from leaking

@rythur imho there hasn't really been a mass migration (yet)

(I mean I guess maybe from twitler to bluesky but I'm not on either)

@bazkie

I was here for the twitter one and, yup, the place became more toxic. Fortunately, it hasn't remained that way too much. I believe the twit migrate also brought more bots, scams, and other stuff like that. And, I could feel the increase in glowies too... You know, the conversation manipulators. It isn't too complicated though: if they are toxic and come here, this place becomes more toxic!

@rythur
Didn't know about those glowies! Interesting!

I do wonder if people don't adjust to the majority. Like if the toxic people are the minority and get negative feedback/no engagement, won't they adjust?

I came here as part of the 2023 Twitter exodus and watched as 98% of my fellow refugees either went back to their abuser or decamped to Bsky instead.

I stayed here cos it felt more like โ€œhomeโ€, like the web of old. Sure itโ€™s quieter, but also weirder in the best sense of the word. More reminiscent of the vibe from when Usenet and forums were the norm. Hell, I first got online via 300 baud modem to a BBSโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very glad to be here! ๐Ÿ˜

This thread sent me searching for a photo of that long-ago 300 baud modem. Closest I could find was this pic of a slightly later model, that had an additional toggle switch to flip between 300 and 1200/75.

Seeing that push-button handset gave me serious nostalgia! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

True, I'm not sure if the UK government could prosecute operators of non-UK servers - though I wouldn't blame instance admins if they decided not to take the risk.

I'm anticipating not being able to do anything online without having to prove my ID. I think at that point I'll just walk away from the whole thing apart from the few services I have to use.

As per my observation, the UK is at the forefront of building a totalitarian state, wonder how much much difference that will make for you when you are identified/have to identify everywhere you go, who you meet, what you do etc.?

Do you think this is helping the Scottish independence movement along?

That will probably just mean that the fediverse will be age gated, too. So I guess I'll see you all on nostr ๐Ÿ˜…
in reply to Fam

@usernomnomnom hahah luckily it's open source & decentral, should be very hard to enforce? What is a nice browser version to join Nostr? I would love to check it out :)
