Water failure now top threat to UK – we should be worried
The UK's water supply is under major threat. What could be a bigger risk to our national security than the failure of our water reserves?Skwawkbox (The Canary)

#WelcomeToTheFediverse, @Lone!
As you might have learned, the #Fediverse is quite different from corporate #SocialMedia sites.
In particular, there's *no* automatic #algorithm. *People* are the algorithm.
As with moving to a new neighborhood, you need to engage consistently.
The first two steps are to create a relevant #Bio and a pinned #Introduction that you (re)boost every week or so.
Here are some further tips to make this a worthwhile experience here:
Good luck!

I've talked about this many times before, but it's worth repeating, so here I go again. It's kind of funny that in just a few years, I've posted more on the Fediverse than I ever did on Twitter. I used to think Twitter was great - fast-paced and easy to use. How wrong I was.
I keep seeing posts on commercial social media platforms saying things like "I wish there was an alternative". People are disappointed, yet they don't want to change how they use social media. It's not about the technology; it's about how we see it. It's like saying "I should drink less alcohol" or "I should stop drinking alcohol" and then doing nothing about it. Everyone does it, and it's just too hard to be different.
The complete dismantling of Meta would offer unambiguous, far reaching benefits for all of humanity.

"Thirty-three states have banded together to sue Meta, alleging that the company was exploiting its young users on Instagram and Facebook for profit, including by collecting data from children without parental consent."
The damages could be as high as $1.4 trillion, nearly the same as Meta's market capitalization at just above $1.5 trillion.

Meta's Teen Safety Case Just Became a $1.4 Trillion Existential Threat
Meta faces damages almost equivalent to its roughly $1.5 trillion market value.Ece Yildirim (Gizmodo)
#Meta has been up to no good for a while - always?
Is $1.4 trillion a reasonable amount for these cases? Who knows.
Is it reasonable compensation for all the evil they’ve done? I’d argue yes.
It’s essentially their entire market capitalization as a penalty.

Excuse my caps:
WEB OF TRUST!!!
:) But seriously, this problem was solved forever ago. Web of Trust technologies allow humans to vouch for each other, to see the web of who vouched for whom, and to integrate those approvals into larger systems.
It's a hobby horse of mine, that so many problems we bring up on social media, and media in general, can be addressed using these old, forgotten technologies.
It's not only about protecting instances from bots but goes even into keeping your social media feeds free of jerks you don't want to see.

Scoop: #WSocial has been experiencing major technical problems for over a week: it is effectively a ghost town, filled with thousands of new accounts that cannot use the platform.
Because my new article contains a possible solution to their problem, by the time you read this the issue may have been fixed. Or not. It has been going on for 7+ days, with complete radio silence by its developers and founders.

W Social: a Broken Ghost Town?

Irgendwie kam mir das Logo von #wsocial doch bekannt vor. Trust your food vs. Trust your feed.
Ich traue beiden nicht.
Just finished "Character Limit" (Conger & Mac, 2024) about how Musk wrecked Twitter, and what's funny is how unremarkable both the world's richest man and the tech he's trying to build really are.
There was nothing genius about any of it. He fired most of the staff overnight, gutted moderation, watched the hate speech and bots he claimed he'd kill flood right back in, and tanked a $44B platform in every possible way. In the end, it was just about power, attention, and owning another rich guy's toy.
Musk doesn't actually want humanity to achieve great things. He's like an adult baby, sucking his thumb and throwing a tantrum whenever he isn't worshipped. The world's richest man and the loneliest internet troll alive, a perfect image of entitlement.
When Trump was banned from Twitter, he was quickly replaced by even bigger man-child. The rise of far-right alt-tech owes a lot to these two clowns. Zuck and Dorsey aren't far behind either.

Social media bans don't work. They just make things worse.
In Australia, for those teens who haven't bypassed the restrictions, their access to news has been curtailed.
How does this square with giving votes to 16 year olds in the UK? Children have rights to free expression too.
ORG's @JamesBaker explains.
