Impressed by how well DeltaChat works nowadays!

delta.chat/en/

I could easily create an account without sharing any details. Connect with a friend's Android based phone & an iPhone. We could videocall & send small apps like a game or a shared list.

Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.

This might be my Signal replacement. Well done @delta

I like Delta Chat, and I'd use it as my go-to messenger... if not for the fact that group control is lacking.

With Delta Chat, anybody in the group can remove anyone else. See:

delta.chat/en/help#addmembers

This should work fine when you're tight with the members of the group, but not when the members of the group are people you don't know super well.

I run such groups, and I need Signal for this, alas.

I tend to use Delta Chat for one-to-one communications.

@yourautisticlife everyone-is-admin works for many larger groups (we know of some >100). Also, If you join groups with largely unknown people, it's recommended to create an extra chat profile for that. So the amount of damage some wild running member could do, is limited to that profile. Otherwise, there are "channels" where only the broadcaster has membership control, but it's one-way communication currently. As things stand, we rather evolve what you can do with channels.

A scenario just popped into my head.

On Signal, nobody can kick me out of a group I manage. If someone tried to impersonate me, other users would see my profile, and the profile of the troublemaker, for one thing, and I'd still be able to kick them out of the group.

On Delta Chat, they can kick me out. So let's assume that I manage my group through Delta Chat, and that a young troublemaker joined my group. This troublemaker creates a profile that copies my profile, kicks me out of the group, and then joins the group with this new fake profile.

I'll note here that it is not a given that I'd notice having been kicked out of my group. The volume of messages of the groups I manage on Signal is very variable. You can have a couple of days of activity followed by a week of silence.

AFAICT nothing prevents this. Am I wrong?

@yourautisticlife yes, someone can kick someone else out of a group, change their avatar/displayname to that person, and hope nobody in the group notices these changes, and the person being forced out does not complain to anyone. Delta Chat is not made for groups where individual members try to wreak havoc. In reality, it's a pretty rare occurence even in >100 people groups.
