Right about time. Next in the row is messages encryption. We will have to wait for it probably next ten years or so. 😂🤣

the PR is very informative for learning about ActivityPub and the Mastodon implementation.

This is great. I agree with the person who said this should have been a 1.0 feature. It's absolutely a failure of the federation system if you can be on a thread and not see messages on that thread.

Was watching the pull request take shape in recent months, brilliant to see it finally got merged! 🥳

And let me guess, some phanaticks are already up in arms against this feature and are threatening to fork the software and defederate any instance that implements this?

(I have no idea why they would do that, but I have a long experience in open source.)

@tml I surely hope not! This will help tremendously everyone. It's been kinda a bug and not a feature.
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

That's a fantastic news for single-user instances #selfhosted !

#substitoot is pretty much mandatory currently to engage with the fediverse, as otherwise I'm missing like 99% of a conversation.

This solves one of my two major pain points with #mastodon (the other one being the inability to follow tags in lists).

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

Oooh, this will help smaller instances a lot! I wonder if I will still need FediFetcher? 🤔
in reply to Roni Laukkarinen

Actually, @luc122c separately DM'ed me in a private mention.

Here is my slightly edited reply to him:

I believe there is still utility in FediFetcher, as FediFetcher can fetch proactively (eg all replies to posts in your home timeline) without having to expand them, and because it can backfill profiles.

But I do hope it’s the beginning of the end of its need!

@LeftistLawyer No, this has been just merged as an early code change, it's not even a feature yet. We'll have to wait when it lands to a release. But admins are of course free to experiment the early things themselves even before. @admin
