@Roquette I don't disagree with you, but you missed step zero, which is where the normies fall off: install a new app.
(...and then do all the things that becoming familiar with a new app entails. The vast majority of people, sadly, do not have the mental bandwidth for this in their lives, especially as they're conditioned to expect a new app onboarding experience to be a hostile, gaslighting and adversarial obstacle course. )
@fluidlogic @Roquette Onboarding new people works best based on real-life situations. There is no global discovery, so usage has to start "small". We already have polls that highlight 67% of users struggle with this step. You are not alone. But it's also hardly a unique issue of Delta Chat. Almost any messenger app that is not named WhatsApp or Telegram has that. The top post was asking about what is unique :)
webxdc apps r awesome. other platforms like xmpp support it but more fragmented ecosystem means u gotta ask ppl if theyre on a supported client first which meant i never really used webxdcs on xmpp.
also identity not being tied to ur address is nice, again comparing to xmpp since that's what i used before, changing server is quite a hassle there with readding people, rejoining chats etc.
@therainingmonkey You can go "Create profile" - "use other server" - "use classic email as relay", and in advanced options disable "enforce encryption on all relays". You can then receive and write (cleartext) emails and anyone with an email address. Own email servers, or big email providers can also be used.
However, all default onboarding paths lead to strict end-to-end encryption, and the use of #chatmail relays. Mass-users need to have fail-safe onboarding and a fully working experience.
> Mass-users need to have fail-safe onboarding and a fully working experience.
I know this argument's been lost, but by (effectively) losing compatibility with classic email most of my contacts haven't moved to secure, private comms but to Facebook Messenger. At least mail with autocrypt was private when both participants wanted it to be.
By moving away from email, Delta Chat has become just another app that my friends won't install because none of their other friends use it.
@matiu_bidule @therainingmonkey since relays and instant onboarding, usage numbers have gone up a lot, and community activities multiplied.
But no question, the use case of cleartext email, and getting a nice chat interface for (mostly) cleartext email, and using email addresses as identity to address someone, has been demoted in the last two years. We understanding the sadness. But that happened because "just use your email" was for many years *not* a mass-user compatible selling point.
the #deltachat project is unique in the realm of secure cross-platform messaging. Thank you for everything.
We use Delta Chat on our in-house servers with the same user account for all applications, and since version 2.51, the loss of access to the DeltaChat folder has caused unwanted messages to appear. Creating additional user accounts or using external relays is not compatible with our in-house servers.
Because Delta Chat uses the email infrastructure side of the internet instead of the telephony side, it can be deployed on systems where a telephone line is not available or undesirable, such as TAILS OS using The TOR Network.
These deployments can still be fully integrated and synchronised with a telephony based installation of the app, totally across platform and/or device, if desired, or remain untraceable and anonymous.
To my knowledge this not possible any other secure messaging service with a decent and functional UI/UX.
Top service with unmatched flexibility and privacy.
I like Delta chat a lot. For institutions it is nice to be able to keep private conversations and chat inside the domain of the institution itself: ex. I can chat with students without the need to exit the domain, accepting thirds party privacy policy in a non monitored place. While everyone likes privacy I like to keep my communications within institutional boundaries, protecting both myself and the students.
Thanks for making a consistent client experience on all platforms. The #iPadOs client is great, and this despite the #Apple ecosystem being quite an awkward fit to #OpenSource projects.
DeltaChat could be the perfect messenger for all schools: *No central administration overwhelming school IT *No parental consent required because it is privacy‑secure and free of charge *Easy group creation in everyday school life via QR code *Continued use after graduation. As of today, students are digitally unplugged when changing schools, and all communication and materials are deleted *Apps and bots can handle school workflows in a structured way — for example, course selection

And to copy the profile from a device to another. Easier than multiply by one.

in reply to Delta Chat • • •It used to be the ability to talk with anyone with an email address, meaning people didn't have to have the app to be part of the ecosystem.
Sadly, that's gone now :(

Same here.
The révolutionary idea of helping people to get out of the Whatsapp prison is lost, and it is really sad.

in reply to Delta Chat • • •Delta Chat is fantastic! I love its privacy and simple, reliable design.
Feature ideas I'd love:
- Clear or delete chats for both parties
- View-once ephemeral messages
- 24-hour Stories to casually share daily moments with contacts
I'm fascinated with the project so I've started making regular donations. Thank you for the great work! 🙌❤️
