I've noticed a new option when posting to #Mastodon, 'Quiet public' which promises "fewer algorithmic fanfare." What's that about? I thought Mastodon doesn't have any algorithms.

Inexplicably, they renamed the more-clear "unlisted" to this vague and confusing term.

The differences:

  • Does not appear in a Tag feed
  • Does not appear in the Federated/Global feed
  • Does not appear in the Local feed
  • Does not appear in searches
  • Does not appear in "trends"

Only the latter has any "algorithm" smell to it.
