Secretary of #State #MarcoRubio has invited senior ministers from more than 60 countries to a meeting next week about what the #Trump admin claims is a major peril — the “resurgence of transnational far-left terrorism,” acc/to documents reviewed by WaPo.

The meeting has prompted consternation among career & political #US officials, some European allies & independent analysts who do not see the threat in the same terms.

Some #US officials…worry it is part of a #Trump admin effort to use powerful counterterrorism tools to crack down on US #activists they view as left-wing extremists.

Trump’s counterterrorism czar, [the #AltRight #FarRight #WhiteNationalist media personality & fraudster] #SebastianGorka, has had discussions with colleagues about using foreign #terrorism labels for #Antifa to justify going after Americans with links to the movement….

A linkage to foreign terrorist groups “can unlock certain investigative tools,” such as #surveillance, said one #US counterterrorism ofcl, who like several other officials interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity….

…Some #Trump admin officials fear that a future Democratic administration could use the tactic against conservative activists, one admin ofcl said. [what goes around comes around]

…Like #SebastianGorka, White House Deputy Chief of Staff #StephenMiller is among those who have shown enthusiasm for taking a hard-line approach to left-wing extremists in the #US. During a WH roundtable last fall, he expressed support for designating #Antifa a foreign #terrorist organization.

“It’s true,” Miller said when #Trump asked for his opinion, “there are extensive foreign ties. I think that would be a very valid step to take.”

But achieving that status for #Antifa would be a stretch, experts say.

#US #law requires a group be foreign to be designated. “If it has any significant domestic presence, it cannot be designated,” said Jason Blazakis, who ran the #State Department’s designation process for 10 years before leaving in 2018.

Elsewhere in the government, discomfort with the direction the admin is such that at meetings of #NationalSecurity ofcls from various agencies, some #intelligence analysts have declined to brief on #Antifa because they do not regard it as a serious counterterrorism threat, acc/to one person familiar with the matter.

Officials from some foreign governments…expressed dismay about the #Rubio invitation, citing what they call its vague aims & the short notice.

…Some said, too, they were unsure why they had been invited. “We don’t have antifa,” said one European diplomat.

“I don’t think we can find any reason why we would be interested in attending such an event,” said another.

“Our law enforcement authorities have not focused on left-wing terrorism because this is not considered a high priority threat in our country,” said a third.

The invitation list…included most European nations, larger Latin American countries & several Asian states, including India, Indonesia & Singapore. The #State Department did not respond to a request seeking to understand how the list of invitees was drawn up.

#Trump has made no secret of his disdain for #Antifa, going so far as to issue an executive order in the fall branding it a “domestic terrorist organization,” a rhetorical label that experts say carries no legal weight.

…The order was followed by the issuance of National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, which directed the #DOJ to “investigate and disrupt networks, entities & organizations that foment political violence.” The document states that Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer engraved the bullets used in the killing with “so-called ‘anti-fascist’ rhetoric.”

That led to a criminal investigation that culminated last month in lengthy prison sentences given to several members of what prosecutors called an “antifa cell” — one defendant received 100 years — for their roles last summer in a protest outside an #ICE facility in Texas during which a police officer was shot. The person sentenced to 100 years was convicted of attempted murder.

The others received prison terms of 30 to 70 years on charges such as rioting, providing support to terrorists & conspiracy to use & carry explosives. [so all #Jan6 offenders should suffer the same fate]

Defense attorneys called the prosecution politically motivated.

#Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is a decentralized movement without a clear command structure or leader, reflecting a range of ideologies mostly on the political left, from anarchism to communism & everything in between. Unlike left-wing extremist groups of the 1960s & 1970s, such as Weather Underground, antifa does not issue manifestos or claim responsibility for actions.

Those of us who are older now so can remember pretty clearly that, since the end of WWII, being "anti-fascist" was something you didn't even think twice about and could take for granted that almost everyone was. If the 47 regime is so set on labeling anyone who challenges their criminal activities as "anti-fascist," it seems very clear that the regime is thereby declaring itself, quite openly, to be a fascist regime. One can hope, though likely in vain, that "reporters" will bring this up with the criminals in this regime and push them to answer this.

@flyhigh
We shouldn't even let them use the word "antifa", because it hides what they are saying. Many people don't know it stands for anti-fascism, they think it is some kind of acronym or foreign word.

If anyone rants about "antifa", make them say out loud that they hate anti-fascists. Make them say out loud that they want fascism.

in reply to FediThing

@FediThing Yes, you're right. It's a shortening of "anti-fascist" that sounds, as you say, like foreign or somehow threatening. Maybe "anti-fash" instead?
in reply to Esslar2

@flyhigh
There's been so little education on this, not even sure people know what "fash" means any more 😦
in reply to FediThing

@FediThing That's true, damnit. Anyone have ideas for other names or titles that would get to younger folks who didn't grow up in the shadow of WWII?
in reply to Esslar2

@flyhigh
The full word "Fascism" is maybe hardest for politicians to explain away in the mainstream media?

There generally aren't politicians saying "I am a fascist" though there are currently plenty saying "I'm against antifa" 😞

in reply to FediThing

@FediThing @flyhigh
As Jeff Foxworthy MIGHT say; If you're not antifa, you just might be a fascist!
in reply to Esslar2

@FediThing PS I was not around during WWII! However, older family members in Germany were Nazis and my father was in the Hitler Youth and drafted into the German navy at 15 years of age. My late partner, much older than me, was a radio operator on bombers over Nazi Germany, flew 22 missions, and was shot down twice. My partner and me worked for years to get laws passed against discrimination based on sexual orientation in our state and I can tell you, gay and bisexual people know what fascism is really like.
in reply to Esslar2

Thank you for sharing that, it sounds like it had an enormous effect on your family and your partner.

It's shocking how far society has fallen in recent years after the massive price paid by the generations that lived through it.

@FediThing Younger people just don't really know how bad things were just like I had no idea how bad things were in Nazi Germany because I wasn't born then. It's not so much forgetting as just not having been there. Fascism, as I have become horribly aware by reading Greg Grandin's "America, America," did not disappear after 1945. In South America, it was alive and well and also aided and abetted by...the United States of America. It's ugly.

I might add that having an older uncle in Germany defend Hitler to me, an "American" teenager, shook me up pretty badly. Never, in my then-short life had I heard anyone say anything good about Adolf Hitler.

in reply to Esslar2

Yes. Thank you for keeping these memories alive. Fascism has been under the radar for so long, society has forgotten its duty to fight it.

I don't know if you've seen this, but the US Army did a really good anti-fascist documentary warning people about the tricks fascism uses to manipulate people: fedi.video/w/t4sN6wtVxGox9V8My…

We really need to be listening to these warnings from the past, because the things they warned about are happening right now.

@FediThing @flyhigh just like “anti-DEI” substituted with “anti-woke” make them say what it means, they are against equity. They are pro fascism. Words matter, call things what they are
