I hope this doesn't sound preachy or pompous, but for me the most important skill in photography is the art of noticing.
You can have all the gear and training in the world, but if you don't learn to look carefully and notice things, they're useless.
Notice how the light falls on things and shapes them, notice reflections, textures, patterns - there's potential everywhere.
Like my local burn that most people pass by without a glance but on bright days reveals treasures.
