Black and white photo, double exposure. In a large oval mirror, the image of a small child can be seen, looking through the mirror into the camera. The child, about 3 or 4 years old, is holding a woman's hand. Both are standing at the counter of a small general store in a village on the Mongolian steppe. The mirror reveals the shelves behind the counter, filled with many small items. The bare wall can be seen around the frame of the mirror. The saleswoman and the woman, whose hand the child is holding, are not looking into the camera and do not notice the presence of the photographer. Due to the double exposure with a very similar image, only the child appears single; other objects in the picture appear strangely doubled. Overall impression: strange, curious, yet as if the viewer were seeing a small piece of themselves, as if through a window into a foreign world.
