If anyone’s looking for a simple free website to record their writing goals (and other goals) I made this site a while ago for a writer friend to use instead of #nanowrimo and it has zero ads, tracking or upselling. It’s solar powered during the NZ day too.
It seems there were already problems with #NaNoWriMo before the latest AI/LLM shitshow. This is the all-time most-upvoted thread on the subreddit:

So. Nanowrimo now supports writing your novel via AI.
I am so heavily disappointed by this. #nanowrimo has helped me for so many years, but this? Too broad. Too far.
No matter what your struggles are, THEFT THROUGH AI (because that is WHAT it is) is not the way to write your novel.
Oh boi, do I have thoughts about #nanowrimo. Disclosure; I have written millions of words (most of them technical), I have done #NaNoWriMo a few times, and I have been writing about #AI since the early 90s.
#LLMs are NOT AI. LLMs are vacuums which sort existing data into sets. They do not create anything. Everything they output depends on stolen data. There is no honest LLM.
This year, Nano is sponsored by an LLM company, and after pushback, they said anyone suggesting AI shouldn't be used was "ableist and "classist"....which....whooweee , that's a mighty bold stance.
LLMs are being sued to hell by authors for slurping up all their content. The reason you can "engineer a prompt" by including "in the style of RR Martin" is because the LLM has digested ALL of RRMartin.
Re: "ableism", I'm going to direct you to Lina² https://neuromatch.social/@lina/113069375384149178, who writes about the issue better than I could. And I want to thank @LinuxAndYarn for coming up with my fave new Nano tag: #NahNoHellNo.

#NaNoWriMo says condemning the use of #LLMs is ableist, but we know that LLMs regurgitate dominant perspectives, biases, and styles. These biases include whiteness, heteronormativity, and, yes, #neuronormativity.Neuromatch Social
I've deleted my NaNoWriMo account. They not only have a generative 'AI' sponsor, they're defending letting you use AI to plaigiarise yourself to 50,000 on the basis that disabled people need AI.
I have a cognitive disability that makes it very difficult for me to write and I am FURIOUS.
Make no mistake, it is very fucking ableist to use people like me as a shield when you are STEALING FROM PEOPLE LIKE ME. They are the ableist ones here. https://www.404media.co/nanowrimo-ai-policy-classist-ableist/
NaNoWriMo Says Condemning AI Is ‘Classist and Ableist’
The organization that runs National Novel Writing Month, a November challenge to write 50,000 words, said "the categorical condemnation of Artificial Intelligence has classist and ableist undertones."Samantha Cole (404 Media)
New discussion on our forums: NaNoWriMo seems to have gone all in on pro-large language model content, attacking advocates of rules against the technology as classist and ableist while not addressing concerns about environmental protection, racism, the erosion of the rights position of independent creators, and accumulation of power by big tech companies.

One of our forum members, Eadgifu the Fair, puts NaNo's attack on AI sceptics for being 'ableist and classist' this way:
"If we're talking about disabled and working-class writers, I want to hear their words, not the words a plagiarism machine has come up with for them. The implication that their own words wouldn't be worth hearing is an ugly one."
NoNoWriMo has an AI sponsor, so now they are pretty gung-ho about AI writing, to the point that they are claiming anti-AI is ableist and classist.
NaNoWriMo gets AI sponsor, says not writing your novel with AI is ‘classist and ableist’
NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) started in 1999 to get writers to spend their November writing a 50,000-word novel. The idea is that quality doesn’t matter — you get into the rhythm of wri…Pivot to AI
