Race-blind college admissions harm diversity without improving quality, study finds
phys.org/news/2024-11-college-…
"They found that the number of top-ranked applicants who identified as underrepresented minorities (URM) dropped by 62% when removing race as a factor from the school's applicant-ranking algorithm. At the same time, the test scores of top-ranked applicants did not meaningfully increase."

Critics of affirmative action in higher education have argued that the policy deprives more qualified students of a spot at a university or college.Patricia Waldron (Phys.org)
I recently taught a course while I was already slightly sick. During the next 2 1/2 hours of lecturing, I completely lost my voice and damaged my vocal chords. 🤦♂️ Don't be me, don't be stupid. Take care of your health first instead of doing things like this out of a sense of obligation.

I would say the purpose of peer-review is to ensure that the work is correct (i.e. gives reliable information about the world).
"Improving the quality" doesn't mean much if the end result is improved but wrong (fake data, wrong statistics, inaccurate interpretation of the literature,...)
"Selecting the best papers" is.. useless IMO. The reader should select the papers they want to read but any results, as long as they're correct, should be published and available to read.
In the spirtit of national have a bad day day (nov 19)I here is a cynical observation and thought.
I hear so much talk in the halls of usa academia these days (post Nov 5) about how we need to "Resist".
In my head I am thinking "We cant even resist sending an extra 10 papers per year to corporate paywall-loving publishers because we are told that will help us with career advancement but sure have fun with your cosplay"
I assume that the scientists heading to Bluesky remember this and are cool with this, right?

#Academia publication question:
What was the website where you see and can give feedback on specific journals (like time to decision, if your manuscript was accepted or not, were the reviews useful, etc)?
Internet is useless to find things these days.
Edit: @steveroyle found it! It's called Scirev

@mattnolan Over the last 2 years, two of my postdocs got a faculty position *without even publishing any paper*, merely on the basis of the work they were doing and having presented it in seminars at the institution that then hired them.
Myself, I got my first faculty position (INI Zurich) *with small papers only from PhD and none from my postdoc*, only on the basis of work done and presented to them. My second faculty position (Janelia) I got *without any CNS paper*, only on the basis of preliminary data acquired at the institute than then hired me to expand the project.
I hope you see the pattern?
You only "need" a CNS paper if you are blind-applying to many places and nobody knows or cares about your research work. Particularly if the places you'd like to work at don't know about you or your research.

So is this the deal with the new @eLife@fediscience.org system: 1- you send your preprint 2- it is reviewed (if they so choose) 3- you eventually upload a final “version of record” OR 4- you send the reviewed preprint (+reviews) to another journal fo…Neuromatch Social
We're helping important organisations move away from Big Tech platforms and towards open New Social platforms - like Mastodon!
But, we can't do it alone. We'd love to hear which organisations you think should make the move and why, so we can show them that there is a community waiting here for them.
Better yet, if you have a connection to an important organisation, we'd love to be introduced!

Good summary of how much influence #Elsevier has on the entire academic ecosystem:
fediscience.org/@WiseWoman/113…
"Publishing is no longer the main focus for RELX and its competitors; instead, they have become data brokers. They sell data to insurance companies for risk analysis, to banks for fraud detection, to universities to assess their performance, and, especially egregious, to the US Immigration Service to target illegal immigrants. "
(RELX is the parent company of Elsevier)
Thank you @WiseWoman for sharing!

I am going to be adding a variation on a "warrant canary" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_…) to the syllabus for any classes that I teach. For example:
"I have _not_ been directed by the university, government, or any other organization to add, alter, or remove any portion of this course. Watch closely for if this notice is ever removed."
If/when institutions try to control what we teach, they may try to prevent sharing details of the ratfuckery that's happening

method of indirect notification of a subpoena, informing users that there has not been a secret subpoena as of a particular date; if the canary is not updated/removed, users are to assume that the host has been served with such a subpoena

🌟Hello #AcademicMastodon🌟
I'm Hannah and currently working on the research project to understand the role of #Mastodon in #academia during my internship here.
If you haven’t done so already, please consider participating in the project. I would love to hear from you:

@mike I was annoyed at first but then realised that web of science is in charge of giving an #ImpactFactor to journals, and so I guess it actually makes sense since the #eLife model goes against the principle of impact factor... Right?
