Three months after the fires, I finally took a break from work, disaster management, and re-establishing domestic infrastructure. I flew up the Owens Valley to Lone Pine, and and spent last weekend walking in the desert, biking in the foothills, and gazing at the stars.

Safe Bike Commuting Tip
Get an brightly colored pool swim noodle and mount it on your rear rack or under your seat with a bungee cord or something.
You will not believe how deferential cars and drivers will become. Nobody will yell at you. Nobody will chase you. They will give you the lane without you having to put your body in it.
Itโs like magic!
The perpendicularly mounted pool noodle creates a visual representation of your lane, a bubble of safety if you will. It will also remind them that you are safety conscious and vulnerable.
I have ridden like this for over 10 years now and I would never go back. It may look ridiculous, but Iโm much safer and the only comments I get from drivers is, โThatโs so clever! I love it!โ
I went for a spring bike ride in the Grizedale Forest yesterday, and had the place nearly to myself.

I've been dying to go for a longer (for me, that means longer than about 15km) ride for weeks. We have an important multi use path that connects the valley with a bunch of higher elevation neighborhoods that's been closed during the week for a couple of months due to major erosion-proofing work they're doing. But, it being Sunday, it was open and useable.
I managed to get 30km in today, and although the weather was due to get weird it fortunately held off until I was finished. It's been pretty cool lately, but I'm hoping to be riding more consistently soon. (It was all of 4C when I started, better than the -2 when I woke up)
