A decade ago, the North Macedonian government embarked on a controversial "antiquization" project in which they built 136 structures across capital city Skopje. These included replicas of the Arc de Triomphe and the White House, a statue of Mother Theresa, and a bronze sculpture of the country's most famous son, Alexander the Great, raising his middle finger towards Greece. Now, many of those structures are cracking and falling apart. Fodor's takes a look at why this building project took place, and what locals think of it now.
