The US is changing back from winning the moon race to a country forbidding abortion because of religion.

“It took less than a year for the new Nazi order to consolidate. By the end of 1933, Germany had become a one-party state in which all major institutions had been humbled. That November German authorities held parliamentary elections (without opposition) and a referendum (on an issue where the "correct" answer was known) to confirm the new order. Some German Jews voted as the Nazi leaders wanted them to in the hope that this gesture of loyalty would bind the new system to them.” #history

Initially, the role of John Rambo was not intended for Sylvester Stallone but for Steve McQueen. However, this legendary actor passed away in 1980, two years before the release of First Blood, the first installment of the trilogy

On this snowy day here in England, I thought I'd share this post about the Devil's Footprints. In 1885, a long meandering trail of marks was left in the snow in Devon. Though they seemed to have been made by a two-legged animal, they resembled hoofprints. They wound through churchyards & across fields, went up the sides of buildings & over roofs, & jumped estuaries - as if the uncanny being who made them had flown. Sometimes they stopped on one side of a haystack & continued on the other, without the hay being disturbed. Elsewhere the creature seemed to have jumped impossibly high walls or wriggled through tiny pipes. The prints went on for between 40 & 100 miles and were reported in the national press. The marks have been blamed on escaped monkeys & kangaroos, on austere Protestants trying to frighten religious rivals, on untethered balloons, UFOs, sea monsters & swans in padded shoes. Southern #Lebanon is actually northern #Israel - opinion

Source: m.jpost.com/opinion/article-82…

Indeed, back in biblical times, southern Lebanon was clearly part of the Land of Israel. In the Book of Genesis (10:19) it says, “and the borders of #Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as #Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Tsevoyim as far as Lasha.” Sidon, a city in Lebanon, is about halfway between the current Israeli border and #Beirut.

On that basis, the whole of America and Australia would have to be returned to the indigenous peoples, and their claims don't even date back to antiquity.

One alarming possibility about the USA potentially becoming an autocracy: extremist acts—many driven by fascist ideologies—could gain significant influence in other nations. Just as the US shapes global societies culturally, scientifically, politically, militarily, and artistically, its descent into authoritarianism might amplify similar movements worldwide, which is a trend since a long time and the far right movement is one of the biggest menaces to the democratic world.

When Hitler rose to power, fascism and tyranny was sparking across Europe. His regime was the most notorious fascist government in history. As nazi Germany became a dominant force that precipitated World War II, how did its relative success embolden fascist movements in other countries? References welcome.

One strange London legend speaks of a motley band of Dickensian-type characters who colonised the Tube network in the late 19th century and never returned to the surface. Their descendants are said to still inhabit the Underground system today. Strangely mutated, they live off rats and mice, discarded food and the occasional late-night passenger. #weird #urban #folklore #history #London #psychogeography #gothic

In 1811, a New Yorker was sentenced to 3 months in prison and fined $500 (about $12,000 today) for publicly insulting Jesus and Mary. The judge said only attacks on Christianity were punishable.

Much has changed since then but it wasn’t until 1952 that the Supreme Court ruled blasphemy was protected speech.

About damn time.

“Revered abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who was the first woman to oversee an American military action during a time of war, was posthumously awarded the rank of general on Monday.

Dozens gathered on Veterans Day at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Maryland’s Dorcester County for a formal ceremony making Tubman a one-star brigadier general in the state’s National Guard.”

The Romans loved a good wall. So much so that by the time of Hadrian’s imperial rule (117-138 CE), Rome had constructed over 10,000 kilometres of walls 😮

That’s longer than the distance between New York and Moscow!

The statue of Eros - god of romantic love and sexuality - graces London's Piccadilly Circus, but he has proved an ambiguous and ambivalent deity. He is actually supposed to be Anteros - Eros's brother - and was set up as a memorial to Lord Shaftsbury, an evangelical Christian who campaigned against child labour and Britain's involvement in the opium trade. Anteros, unlike his lustful sibling, represents divine love for our fellow creatures. Shaftsbury would probably disapprove, however, of much of what has gone on under Anteros's gaze, with prostitution and the sex trade in that part of London rife. Also, the Boots chemist at Piccadilly Circus was for years the place where the majority of Britain's opioid addicts picked up their prescriptions of medical-grade heroin. A century ago, this woman, pioneering sex researcher Katharine Bement Davis, challenged the idea that respectable women did not – and should not – experience sexual desire, or have sex except to please men and have children.

But while Americans’ understanding of sex has improved over the past century, the “orgasm gap” between men and women is still very much with us.

Has anyone read "They Thought They Were Free"? I haven't, but I just saw it mentioned & looks like I should.

"They Thought They Were Free: The Germans 1933-45 is a 1955 nonfiction book written by Milton Mayer, published by the University of Chicago Press. It describes the thought process of ordinary citizens during Nazi Germany.

August Heckscher, the chief writer of editorials of the New York Herald Tribune, wrote that the book "suggests how easy it is for human beings in any society to fall prey to a dynamic political movement, provided their lives are sufficiently insecure, frustrated or empty."[1] He stated that the book is simultaneously a discussion on ethics, on "how political tyranny is established", and on issues in Germany and the "German mentality".[1]"

The untold story of the world’s biggest #nuclear #bomb

Source: thebulletin.org/2021/11/the-un…

Designed to have a maximum explosive yield of 100 million tons (or 100 megatons) of #TNT equivalent, the 60,000-pound monster bomb was detonated at only half its strength. Still, at 50 megatons, it was more than 3,300 times as powerful as the atomic bomb that killed at least 70,000 people in #Hiroshima, and more than 40 times as powerful as the largest nuclear bomb in the US arsenal today. Its single test represents about one tenth of the total yield of all nuclear weapons ever tested by all nations.

In Britain, Bonfire Night (5th November) has a history as an especially badly behaved festival. 'Bonfire Boys' would take over neighbourhoods, light fires in the streets, set off fireworks indiscriminately, roll blazing tar barrels along roads, and engage in acts of vandalism. There were also fights, loud and discordant music, and the parading of effigies of Guy Fawkes, for which money was collected from shopkeepers and passers-by in a rather direct manner. The attempts of the authorities to suppress these celebrations often led to pitched battles with the police. Eventually, the authorities got their way and Bonfire Night was tamed, with either suburban back-garden events or well-organised municipal displays becoming the norm. #history #folklore #BonfireNight #weird

‘When emancipation comes, it was a shock to a lot of white people in this country to see formerly enslaved people so eagerly embrace democracy—embrace the right to vote. Eighty percent of Black males registered to vote immediately after emancipation and began using the ballot to create real opportunities and power,” says Bryan Stevenson.

“Violence became the primary tool for pushing against that Black participation.”’

Nielsen Grist Mill built in 1893 by Niels Hansen for Hans Peter Nielsen. The mill was powered by water from the Fremont River. Farmers would receive one sack of flour for three sacks of wheat. The mill operated until the 1930s. Apparently, the mill still contains its original equipment. It is on private property and not open to the public. (West of Torrey, Utah, 10/25/2024.)
