The student protest movement against Israel's genocide, apartheid and occupation in Palestine has now spread to Sweden, as encampments started popping up yesterday in cities like Stockholm, Örebro, Göteborg and Lund. The demands range from simply urging that the universities acknowledge the ongoing atrocities to calls for cutting all ties with weapon manufacturers and other organizations or individuals with ties to the ongoing occupation and genocide.

Today in Labor History May 4, 1970: Ohio National Guards murdered four students at Kent State University. They also injured nine others, including one who was permanently paralyzed. During the massacre, they fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds at the unarmed crowd. The students were protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. With the current wave of student protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the government’s response is looking sickeningly similar to its response to student protests in the early 70s: Violent repression, use of chemical agents, snipers on rooftops. If the vitriolic rhetoric of politicians and pundits continues, another student massacre seems imminent.

Chanting "Who failed Uvalde?" at the DPS officers who came to riot was just cold. Absolutely deserved but also a stark indictment of Texas' incompetent police state. That took bravery but the students also had nothing to lose - they were going to get brutalized by DPS no matter what they did so they might as well call out DPS for its cowardice and ineffectiveness. Still, bringing up Uvalde was admirably cold.
