July: This is Hvalfjörður* in western #Iceland. What looks like an island in the fjord is actually a spit of land curving away from the viewpoint.

Cloaked

September, and the vog from an eruption in a different part of #Iceland is causing some unusual atmospheric conditions around the island nation.
In this one, sunbeams are being intensified by the gaseous haze high above.

"Thus sometimes hath the brightest day a cloud;
And after summer evermore succeeds
Barren winter, with his wrathful nipping cold:
So cares and joys abound, as seasons fleet."
- #ShakespeareSunday, Henry VI, Part II

#WaterfallWednesday

A slightly different viewpoint today, this is the top of Goðafoss waterfall in Þingeyjarsveit, north-eastern #Iceland. Water from the Skjálfandafljót river falls from a height of ≈ 12m (40ft) over a width of ≈ 30m (100ft) in four separate drops.

This is a view from the west bank, overlooking the crest of all four.

Shining Sky

03:30 on an August morning, and insomnia had taken over again.

Through the bathroom skylight I could see something strange above us, so I fetched my camera quietly so that I didn't wake anyone, and opened the blinds in an empty room.

It was the best display of #noctilucent cloud I've ever seen in my almost 70 years.

Then I woke my partner so he didn't miss it!

Mother Of Pearl

Polar stratospheric or nacreous clouds last Christmas.
Due to their altitude of 15,000–25,000 m (49,000–82,000 ft) and the curvature of the Earth's surface, these clouds shine brightly before dawn or after dusk. Consisting of ice crystals, these form below −78°C (−108°F) and are now more common outside of the polar regions due to global warming.

Dunder And Blixem

Reindeer are not native to #Iceland. They were imported from Norway during the 18th century to create stock agriculture in the country.

These attempts seemed to fail as most of the animals couldn't tolerate the harsh weather conditions and limited food supply and they were assumed extinct, until a herd of roughly 100 was spotted in the east.

As of today, there are about 7000 reindeer in Iceland.

Pareidolia

Today I decided to demonstrate that I'm not a one-trick Icelandic horse, and do actually photograph other things.

I love spectacular weather, particularly crepuscular events like today's shot of a magnificent sunset.
In case you're wondering about the title, it means to interpret objects into something known to the observer, such as seeing shapes in clouds.
This one is my golden whale! What do you see?

Elephant's Head

This is Reynisfjall, a cliff face with famous basalt caves named Hálsanefshellir.
The beach is Reynisfjara, one of the loveliest but most dangerous black beaches of #Iceland.

To get this shot, I had to get as far away as I could, turning my back to the sea. I was with my partner and he was watching the waves. I took the photo as quickly as I could, and we moved back to a safe distance from the sea.

The region cloud hath mask'd him from me now."
