A thing like this [fedialgo] should be built-in to Mastodon. An algorithmic feed YOU can customize to YOUR liking in settings, and then it will just be there in the Explore tab. Heck, we could even have custom feeds like Bluesky and Threads, but USER driven.
I could just try and create to my Mastodon fork here at #MementoMoriSocial as a christmas holiday project.

And have been wishing for, as not all algorhythms are evil like seems to be the common view in mastodon.
To be fair, even showing toots from the users you are following in reverse tooting order IS an algorhythm.

lol indeed... the amount of vitriol i got from some people on here for even mentioning fedialgo kind of blew my mind. got immediately blocked or muted at least 2-3 times.

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen • • •: I certainly don’t want that in my home feed but I admit that this would be an awesome way to replace the somewhat obscure "explore" tab.
It could even be defaulted to the current behaviour so most users would not see a difference.

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen • • •This looks very interesting! Just had a quick look, but from what I've seen it's not integrated into the server, but provides the feed externally?
Would be cool to have this built into Mastodon, but opt-in of course. So I'm looking forward to your fork 😁

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen • • •I could be wrong, but wasn't the point of mastodon (and the rest of the fediverse for that matter) to avoid having something and/or someone else in control of what you see and what you don't?
Personally, I like being able to see every entry related to a particular hashtag when I click on it, and not a curated, filtered, expurgated, or censored version of what exists under that hashtag... an algorithm, even if it is "user customizable", by its nature will only serve to limit what we see on a subject.
If I wanted a computer/AI/figurehead to tell me what I can and cannot see on social media, I'd still be on Xitter.
Now, if such a thing were a plugin for the user's side, it wouldn't be objectionable, because the user would then be choosing whether to wear their rose-colored glasses or not, but integrating it into the server itself, where the owner/admin chooses FOR the users whether it's there or not seems to go against the reasons the Fediverse was created in the first place.
Just my opinion...

Exactly. Did you miss the words capitalized in my post, "YOU", "YOUR" and "USER"?
An algorithm you control yourself by definition is not controlled by somebody else.

in reply to Roni Laukkarinen • • •First off, thank you for misinterpreting what I was saying, whether intentional on your part, or due to lack of clarity on mine. Also, thank you for being a bit insulting in your response, treating me as if my IQ isn't North of 80...
As for your statement "[a]n algorithm you control yourself....": sure, you can outline what you'd like the algorithm to choose, but someone's computer, somewhere, is still doing the choosing (and learning, and modifying your choices, etc, etc, etc...) for you.
There is already an "algorithm" that you can fully control, completely.. If your goal is to re-create what hashtags already do on Mastodon, then, congratulations, you've re-invented the wheel.
And with that, given your propensity to be insulting to people you don't know, and given your shortsightedness and inability to see the potential caveats to your own plan, I welcome you to visit /dev/null.
Look at that! I'm choosing what shows up in my feed...
...without an algorithm.
