Mountain Waving

Lómagnúpur has a hat and scarf, as strong winds across the flat land in the south form lens-shaped orographic wave clouds around and above the peak.

When air blows over mountains it can set up standing waves in air downstream, like ripples forming when water flows over an obstruction. The rising motion of the wave causes water vapour to condense, forming lenticular clouds.
