Floating Islands

July: This is Hvalfjörður* in western #Iceland. What looks like an island in the fjord is actually a spit of land curving away from the viewpoint.

In the background is Skarðsheiði mountain range, with Skarðshyrna on the left.

Cloaked

September, and the vog from an eruption in a different part of #Iceland is causing some unusual atmospheric conditions around the island nation.
In this one, sunbeams are being intensified by the gaseous haze high above.

"Thus sometimes hath the brightest day a cloud;
And after summer evermore succeeds
Barren winter, with his wrathful nipping cold:
So cares and joys abound, as seasons fleet."
- #ShakespeareSunday, Henry VI, Part II

#WaterfallWednesday

A slightly different viewpoint today, this is the top of Goðafoss waterfall in Þingeyjarsveit, north-eastern #Iceland. Water from the Skjálfandafljót river falls from a height of ≈ 12m (40ft) over a width of ≈ 30m (100ft) in four separate drops.

This is a view from the west bank, overlooking the crest of all four.

Dunder And Blixem

Reindeer are not native to #Iceland. They were imported from Norway during the 18th century to create stock agriculture in the country.

These attempts seemed to fail as most of the animals couldn't tolerate the harsh weather conditions and limited food supply and they were assumed extinct, until a herd of roughly 100 was spotted in the east.

As of today, there are about 7000 reindeer in Iceland.

The Solar eclipse as seen from my home in Reykjavík, Iceland.

If you look closely you can see a sunspot close to the centre of the sun.

Taken with a Canon 77D, 400mm lens with a Seymour Solar filter at the front of it.

Elephant's Head

This is Reynisfjall, a cliff face with famous basalt caves named Hálsanefshellir.
The beach is Reynisfjara, one of the loveliest but most dangerous black beaches of #Iceland.

To get this shot, I had to get as far away as I could, turning my back to the sea. I was with my partner and he was watching the waves. I took the photo as quickly as I could, and we moved back to a safe distance from the sea.

Edge Of The Ice

Late February at midday, and the lake water is warm enough to stay partially liquid.

This is Mývatn in Skútustaðahreppur, north-eastern #Iceland. It's surrounded by - and contains - what are known as rootless cones, volcanic landforms without an actual vent below. These were probably caused by steam explosions when lava covered the wetlands.

February: A beautiful blue fjord beneath an almost clear cyan sky. A perfect day for driving, and a lovely area to drive through.

Glacial Pace

November, and the low midday sun highlights the contours of Breiðamerkurjökull and the clutter of blue ice that has calved from it.

Jökulsárlón in Suðursveit, one of the many jewels of #Iceland, tinged with sadness as melting is creating accelerating enlargement.

Aurora Panorama

One wonderful night in Berufjörður in eastern #Iceland when we saw not one but two auroral displays.

Mid-November and conditions were good, so we set up in our chosen parking spot at about 7pm. We were rewarded with a lovely 30 minute show.

Going back to our hotel for dinner, we decided to try one more time before bed and returned at about 9pm. Within minutes, another glorious display lit the sky.
