Got The Hump

A magnificent humpback whale surfaces for a breath before deep-diving again to feed.

We were aboard a converted whaling trawler, one of a fleet of '70s oak boats that have been lovingly restored and converted to carry tourists out into the bay.

Armed only with our cameras, we had a wonderful day.

September, Skjálfandi¹ bay near Húsavík² in north-eastern #Iceland.

50 years ago, 90% of Iceland's women went on strike to protest the gender pay gap. 25,000 gathered in the center of Reykjavík — a remarkable turnout given that the country's population was less than 220,000 at the time. Their efforts worked: The world's first female elected president took office five years later, and with successive strikes over the subsequent decades, the gender pay gap has been closed by more than 90%. But President Halla Tómasdóttir says there's still work to be done. Here's more from The Week.

Aurorae, runner-up: Celestial Arch by Luis Vilariño

This image shows an intense aurora, forming an immense arc that spans more than 180 degrees. The gigantic and perfect green neon sign illuminates the entire sky in Iceland last December.

"Those lines that I before have writ do lie,
Even those that said I could not love you dearer:
Yet then my judgment knew no reason why
My most full flame should afterwards burn clearer."

50 Years Ago, #Iceland's #Women Went on #Strike. It Changed Everything.
They stopped cleaning and cooking; stopped doing laundry and stopped looking after their children. They’d had enough. The sudden work stoppage—which dramatically called attention to women’s demand for equal pay for paid work as well as for recognition for unpaid labor—reverberated around the world. Today it has smallest #gender #paygap in the world, with some of the world’s toughest equal pay #laws.

What is the absolute worst thing human beings have enabled in the modern era?

No, no, forget the usual topics

It is this:

😱 🦟

"#Mosquitoes have arrived in #Iceland

Three #mosquitos were found in Kjós recently. This has been confirmed by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. This is the first time that the flies have been found on Icelandic soil."

Growing Green

We chose a safe, off-road parking spot to observe the #aurora. As I began to photograph, a car approached from behind us and lit the tree beside me.
The result was almost the same shape as the developing aurora.

The yellowish glow on the horizon is a group of farms beyond the hill.

A small hydropower station built in 1906 in Hveragerði. It was used to power the first streetlights in rural Iceland. This was done following an accident when a man fell into a hot spring at night and died. The hot spring was then named Manndrápshver (man killing hot spring). #Iceland #photography
